Pregnant after IF

Any of you have success with acupuncture?

I'm thinking of trying acupuncture after hearing some success stories.  I'm most concerned about the cost, along with the cost of my other IF treatments.  Anyone have any success stories to offer?

Re: Any of you have success with acupuncture?

  • I did acu during my IVF cycle - 3 sessions leading up to ER, 1 immediately before ET and 1 the day after ET and we have one sticky baby.  I don't know if it was acu that did the trick - it could have played a part.  Good luck!

  • I did acupuncture leading up to and during my IVF and my FET, then through then end of my first tri.  It was $75 per session.  Some insurance covers acupuncture - mine did not - but it is tax deductible as a medical expense.

IVF was a fail, but we had so many decent embryos - 7 total - so I still think that's a success?  The FET worked like a charm.

I think whatever helps you to truly relax is worth it!!!!!  It helped to reduce tension/anxiety for me.

  • i am a huge believer in acu. i've done it for both IVF cycles (both BFPs - 1 c/p and now).

i really believe that it helped me respond well to the meds and minimized my side effects. in any case, it definitely helped me relax through a stressful time.

it is expensive but you should check to see if your insurance will cover part of the cost (last year my insurance coverered 70% - new insurance this year doesn't). also, you are able to use an FSA/HSA to pay for treatments as well. if neither insurance nor the FSA/HSA apply to you, then at the very least you can write-off acupuncture as a medical expense.

    good luck!

And, I started acu when I started the BCPs for IVF, going weekly.

  • Thanks, girls.  I am struggling with a lot of anxiety and stress, as well, so I wonder if acu might be the ticket to help with it, too.  Also, we are on a TTC break until summer.  Do you think I should start it now or wait until we do another IUI this summer?

  • I started accu about 5 wks before ER. I did it twice a week them once b/w ER and ET. And been going once a week since my BFP. It's expensive ($85) but I will continue to do it till end of 1st tri. I don't know if it did the trick but I did get pg so I like to believe it helped.

  • I think that it helps to start early, but if you're waiting to start again until June or so, you could minimize the cost by not starting until maybe April?  I definitely understand the anxiety and stress.  I joined a swim class when we were on a TTC break which was great - it wore me out and really helped!!!
  • a lurker posting.

I am doing acupuncture right now. With our last cycle a bust, I decided to focus on this for the next 3-4 mos and then go back for treatment and continue with acu. The past two times I got it, I felt soooo much better. In fact, I have fallen asleep in the room.Embarrassed

I am willing to spend $20 for the copay now and then it will give us time to save up for our next round of IF treatment.

    GL!

  • I have done acupuncture along with cycles for the last 2 years.  It totally helped me with my first BFP.  But I mostly think it helped me to relax and helped with stimming (keeping down the bloat, getting blood to the endometrium).  But I neglected to do it this time around and still had success. So if you think it is too pricey then I don't think it is a big deal to leave it out.

  • Yes, I credit acupuncture (along with a great RE!) with helping me have a successful cycle. Prior to starting the cycle, my RE gave me about a 15% chance of getting pg with IVF bc of my dx of DOR and DH is borderline MFI. (previous RE gave me even worse odds- 5%)

Leading up to ER, I did 5 weeks of acu plus electro stim 2x a week, plus ate as organic as possible, did daily meditation, weekly yoga, abstained from alchohol (so did DH) and caffeine. As I cycled, my RE said that I was responding perfectly to the meds and everything was on track. Being DOR, I was worried about canceled cycles or not responding to meds, especially since I did not respond at all to the Clomid challenge.

I also did acu after ER and then before and after ET. When I got to ET, the embryologist gave me 50/50 odds on getting pregnant, which is the best you can get. I know acu can end of costing a lot, but I really think its worth it. Just make sure you go to someone who is trained in acu for infertility.

IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

  • I know it's expensive but I absolutely think it is worth it. I didn't do it with IVF#1 but I did 2 sessions during stims and 1 before and after ET and IVF#2 worked!!

I hated paying $500 to be poked with even more needles but I really think it made a difference. We got more eggs the second time, we had more embryos make it to transfer, it helped with the bloating, oh, and I got a BFP!

Good luck and I think it's worth looking into!
