Pregnant after a Loss

Intro & ? about birthing classes for those that had late losses

hi everyone

long time lurker, first time poster on this board.  my name is michelle & my husband & I lost twin girls almost a year ago due to IC & TTTS.  i used to post on M/PL & TTCAL, but took a break from thebump for a couple of months.  now that i'm back, i'm so happy to see so many familiar "faces" on PgAL!

i have a question for those ladies that had late losses.  we lost our girls at 21 weeks and i went through all the motions of labor.  i'm 25 weeks now and wondering if we should take a birthing class for this pregnancy.  what are your thoughts??

tia!

Re: Intro & ? about birthing classes for those that had late losses

  • I was in a very similar situation.  We lost our daughter at 21 weeks due to Dandy Walker Malformation and I had to go through labor but at 6 cm she just kind of slid out.  I was going to take classes because I think the situation is so different now and I'll have to do a good portion of laboring at home and want to have the knowledge of breathing etc to deal with the pain.  The last time I went straight for an epidural partly because of the pain and partly because of the emotional factor.

  • I'm not going to take a birthing class.  I have to have a c-section but regardless i wouldn't have taken a birthing class again.  I took one when i had my 1st baby (vag. delivery) and honestly i don't think i used one thing the class taught us.  lol The only reason i really wanted to take it the first time around was for DH.

  • I think that we will finish the class that we where taking (Bradley) it will help I think with making this pregnancy feel more normal.

I know some places have classes for pregnancy after loss and that some teachers will work with just you and your DH.

  • I am in a similar situation as you, and we are taking classes this time. We did not take them last time, and my labor was very easy (it was chemically induced as she died from a placental abruption while in utero). However, she was only 1 pound so I only had to push once, and I had an epidural. I figure it will be a different experience with a larger living baby, so I want to know all I can beforehand.

  • thanks for the advice ladies.  i think we will go ahead and take a class.  you're right, things are going to be VERY different this time around.  our twins were less than a lb each so very easy to push out.  a larger living baby will definitely be different.
