Infertility

Does anyone travel 2-3 hours for treatments?

Our Uro moved 2 1/2 hours away and our clinic no longer has the ability to do a mTESE so it looks like we will have to travel for IVF. I will be off for the summer, so that will help at least.

Does anyone else travel 2-3 hours for treatments?  How difficult is it?   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Does anyone travel 2-3 hours for treatments?

  • My monitoring is done in the area, but my ER/ET has always been done 2+ hours away, plus an hour time difference. It works out just fine. Most times, our procedures are done early in the morning, so we stay at a hotel the night before and make it a date night of sorts. Keeps the feelings light and a little less formal.

    Good luck to you!!

  • Hey Kyna!  How's everything been going?  I imagine you're just as anxious as I am to get this first cycle started.  Catch me up!

  • My main clinic is 2.5 hours each way. They do have a satellite office where I can do monitoring that is an hour away. DH's uro is also an hour away. To be honest, it sucks. But...we make it work because we have to.

  • I monitor about 20 minutes from my home but I go for treatments two hours away ... At first we thought it would be a pain but it really isn't ... It's just one of those things you "have to do", ya know?
  • Thanks ladies, I'm just a little worried.  Having to change clinics and everything really sucks.  I know it will work out and we will make it work but just wanted to hear that others have/are doing/done it.

We were pretty much set up to go at our current clinic.  The uro was still commuting back and forth but is now no longer affiliated with the hospital/clinic.  So now we will have to travel 2 1/2 hours.  I have to make an appointment with the clinic he is working with and we are thinking we will push it back to end of May or June so I will pretty much be out for the summer if I have to travel back and forth a lot.  We are trying IVF w/ICSI and mTESE and using donor as a back up.  We still need to choose a donor and figure all that out.

How are you and what is your plan?

  • Hope you don't mind me responding...  (LOs in siggy)

For IVF #3 we switched clinics and our new clinic was 2 hrs from home.  It actually was a lot easier than I expected.  I did all of my monitoring at a local clinic and we drove to our clinic for ER and ET.  FWIW, IVF #3 was a BFN and we travelled 2 more times for FETs.  Once or twice I had to make the long drive for u/ss when the local clinic was not responsive when I needed a weekend follie or lining check.  It wasn't ideal but it wasn't that big of an issue.

I don't think I've chatted with you since my DH was dx last summer!  It's good to *see* you again.

We're just doing a lot of waiting at this point....for school to be out for the summer, to have more $ set aside, etc.  It sounds like we'll be cycling around the same time (my ER should be mid June), so I'm glad to have you here.  I've gotten so much from this board already.

I hope everything works out with the new clinic.  PM me anytime!

  • I have decided to change RE's for many reasons. The RE in town that has the highest success rates, and the best personality (we have seen every RE in town over the last three months while waiting to see a genetics counselor) does all his ER and ET in a town 2.5 hours away.

I will do all my monitoring appointments at the local office, but will travel for the ER and ET. I will most likely get a hotel and just stay out there between R and T.
