Age to start daycare advice!

Unfortunately, I need to go back to work within 6 weeks (when most daycares start accepting infants).  The good thing is, I can go back at 3 days/week.  The daycares I like don't accept part-time infants, so I'd be paying the full 5 days regardless.  I am now crunching numbers of a highly recommended nanny service. I am considering getting a 3-day/week nanny for weeks 6-12 and then starting daycare at around 12 weeks.  I would be paying about twice as much with all of the registration fees and hourly pay, but it would be short term so I know that financially it's do-able.  Would you do this or would you just start daycare at 6 weeks since I really can't afford to keep a nanny longer than a couple of months?  If we really saved our pennies we could keep the nanny until the baby is about 4 months old. Thanks for any advice on this!

  • I personally would pay fulltime DC and that way baby can get used to it and doesn't have to hang out with new person for 6 weeks and then totally new situation in another.

  • Ditto!! Even if you aren't using the full time care now it is nice to know you have the option. There may be days where you are sick, etc.. and could use a break and could take the baby to daycare on those days so you can get some rest.
  • Thanks for the responses!  I think that's the way we will go as long as we get our 1st choice.  Right now it seems like our first choice would definitely have a spot by 12 weeks, but they aren't sure at 6 weeks.
  • I would also start the daycare if it's a great place.  You want to secure a spot and it might be nice, especially in the beginning to be able to get some errands done without a crying baby.  You could drop off the baby at the daycare for two hours while you go grocery shopping, to the gym, whatever.  It will be more fun for the baby and much easier for you!  I remember hating the grocery store when my baby was that young because there was so much to carry!
