Cloth Diapering

If you use fitteds with wool covers overnight (for your toddler)...

I posted below that I am in need of a new overnight system.  I knew the replies would all be fitteds with wool!  I have been very hesitant to try this out mostly because I'm concerned about how bulky it would be.  With pockets stuffed to the absolute max I can barely get his pj pants on him (they NEVER cover his diaper completely!!)  I know I will get tarred and feathered for saying this but I'm not feeling the love for longies and shorties either!

So, if you have a toddler and you use fitteds with a wool cover how bulky is it?  What brands do you use?   Please help me get over my fear of fitteds and wool!!

  • I was terrified of fitteds with wool too!  But let me tell you, it's SOOO much more bulletproof than pockets.  At least for us.  Favorites are Goodmamas Goodnights or B4 or Goodmama fitted with an AFFF insert trifolded underneath the soaker.  Most mornings, the diaper is just barely damp on the front.  If DS has had a ton to drink before bed, the diaper will occasionally be soaked through, but the lanolized wool whisks the moisture away.  I don't think we've ever had any sort of leak when using fitteds and wool.  Before I built a larger wool stash, I would occasionally use a pul cover or a pocket and it was mostly a nightmare.  Don't be scared!  Once you take the plunge, you'll wish you had done it sooner.  :)  GL!

Oh whoops!  No bulk really.  There was waaaay more bulk in the overstuffed pockets.  With fitteds, bulky doesn't really equal more absorbancy.  I love Sweet Violet's Mama and Owe Whoa When soakers.  They are on etsy.  I've heard good things about Sbish and Wild Child Woolies, but I haven't tried them so I can't give a review.  Sbish and WCW are wool interlock, whereas the first two I listed are upcycled wool.  I also like Monkey Snuggles soakers- they're handknit.  Oh!  And Woollybottoms!  In the winter, DS sleeps in their footies.  They're awesome and really thin!

  • I used fitteds under wool soakers on DD for quite a while. It was bulky, for sure, but I dunno, it was never a problem. For a long time, I used mostly one-piece footie PJs, and those were baggy enough that they fit over the soakers with no problems. Then, for the last year or so, I've sewn her PJ bottoms (basically fleece longies) myself, and I purposefully make them big enough to fit over her nighttime diapers.

Here's a picture from shortly before her second birthday. The soaker is homemade. I think the diaper underneath is a Happy Hempy.

Under pajamas... these are standard footie PJs, from Carters:

  • I do the exact same thing as Flyer is regards to fitted+soaker+fleece longies and you will NEVER have  a leak.  It does seem bulkier at first when compared to just regularly stuffed pockets (one insert) but its not a huge difference and especially if you've been stuffing the pockets extra for overnight I'd assume the bulk would be fairly similar.  Some nights I do longies instead of the soaker and fleece pjs and then just do a tee on top.  Thats what we do most days now too- I've become addicted to fitteds and wool

I used Sbish for overnight- the snapless fitted is AMAZING!  Under $20 for a truly fabulous diaper- I wish I had known about them sooner and I would have a lot more than just 3!  Then I use wool on top.  So far we've only used upcycled wool.  I've made a few myself but I also like the ones I got from LocoGnome on Etsy- good prices plus she has 20% off right now for Facebook fans.

  • It's not *that* bulky. DD is currently wearing either MSO or MSO XL. Considering it's still super cold here, we're using WB footies over it. I don't feel the footies love, but I see it more as a functional thing than having to love it. It works great.

Just out of curiosity, why are you not feeling the love? You don't want to pay for them, or you don't like the look of them?

  • Honestly?   I find the bulk of pockets (double stuffed) on Natalie much bigger than fitteds/wool combo....     She's very small and the pocket dipe just seems to overwhelm her whereas the fitteds (even one sized) seems to somewhat "conform" to her little body...

I dunno.... maybe it has to do with fit/size/body size/etc.

I just don't like the look of them...no real reason they're just not my thing I guess!
