Trying to Get Pregnant

maternity/pregnancy insurance question

Good evening ladies :)

So, the way I understand it from all the questions I've seen here, most insurance covers you only after a year of being on the plan.  I'm planning (hoping!) to switch jobs soon, and I wonder if that same "rule" applies if I were to switch to DH's insurance?  He's been with his company for well over a year if that helps.  Any thoughts or insight you all have would be great!  Thanks and here's a Drinks for stopping by ;)

It does help, thank you!  If by some miracle it happened in the next year, I just want to make sure we're covered, ya know?

p.s. I love looking at your sig, those pics are just beautiful!

  • Not sure the exact answer to your question but I did a little research and this is what I could find out....

     https://www.insure.com/articles/healthinsurance/pregnancy.html

Federal law bars group health insurance plans that cover maternity from considering pregnancy a pre-existing condition. This means that if you change group health plans while you're pregnant, your new group health insurer (as long as it covers maternity) can't deny claims related to your pregnancy."

If you're planning to become pregnant, make sure you have health insurance first. If you're pregnant and thinking about switching jobs, be aware that you might have to go a month or two without insurance, and make sure your next health plan covers pregnancy. Check with the company's employee benefits administrator to find out."

Based on what this article is saying I would imagine that if your coverage would start immediately after you switch to your husband's insurance then your pregnancy would be immediately covered.

No group policy I have ever seen has that restriction. You would have to check your husband's plan to see what their rules are- we have no way of knowing unless we work with your husband (and don't throw out it's BCBS or whatever- different companies have different policies written for them with different features).

The big thing the year restriction usually applies to is a single policy or for short term disability.

Ah, that makes sense...thanks and congrats on your little one :)  I suppose I could have him ask his HR/People person if I get the other job and we make the switch, I was just looking for some insight from you all.
