baby vitamins?

Our pedi recommended that we start giving E vitamins* at her 2-month appt.  She said she preferred Poly-Vi-Sol with iron, but we have tried to give it to E in SO many ways and she hates the taste, even if the dose is spread out over multiple bottles.  Some days she even refuses to drink bottles for hours while I'm at work until she gets one without vitamins in it. The stuff does taste awful.  I'm guessing it's the iron in it.

The pedi did say that if we can't get her to take it, not to worry and just do a vitamin D supplement if that's all we can do, but babies don't get much iron until they start solids. I still think a multivitamin would be good.

Does anyone have a vitamin that their baby will take?   Is it really necessary?

*Note: we have had NO problems with weight gain/general health (obviously!), it's just something the pedi thinks is good for all babies.

Re: baby vitamins?

  • We did Poly-Vi-Sol but divided into 2 doses and did half in the AM bottle and half in the PM bottle.  Move to Tri-Vi-Sol - taste/smell much better and easier for the kiddo.

  • Babies are born with enough iron stores to last through at least six months. If you're breastfeeding breast milk is made to have the right nutrition for a baby. And if you're formula feeding then formula is fortified with iron. The only thing breadtmilk might not have is vitamin d since humans were meant to b outside. But here we are not and even if we are it's raining or we have sunscreen on. So vit d supplements are now recommended. You can get drops that you only need one single drop per day. Easy!

  • Tri-Vi-Sol is the way to go.
  • We do liquid C and D drops and she laps them up.

That's what we tried - no dice.  Some days she'll drink it, others she won't.  It's not worth tossing my liquid gold.  I must have a picky baby! :)

I got some at Target tonight (the iron-free type) and OMG - she loved it.  I think she was disappointed that when I nursed her afterward that it didn't taste as fruity delicious.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • Why bother with the iron free kind? I thought iron was what you were concerned with?

Man, I really sound like a dingdong today!  I was just trying to find out if the iron was really THAT important and/or if there was some other multivitamin (other than just plain vitamin D drops) that my picky girl could try.  I agree that the vitamin D seems most important, but didn't want to be that only terrible mom who wasn't doing iron supplements.

  • When you are bf/ing full time there is no need at all for the tri vi sol. They don't need a multi. Breadtmilk and formula provide complete nutrition. And too much fat soluble Vitamins like A and E can be harmful. Iron and D are really the only potential concerns before a year.

  • You can actually take the full bottle of Poly-Vi-Sol with iron to walgreens and they can add flavoring to it.  My DD likes it with the grape flavoring.
