Pregnant after a Loss

Hearing hb vs. Seeing hb

I know I'm probably over-analyzing this but...

Is there a big difference between being able to see the baby's hb (but not hearing it) and being able to see and hear the hb?

I've seen so many women here able to hear the hb earlier then 6w5d and it's getting me a little freaked out the more I think about it.

Has anybody here seen the hb, but not hear it, only to see and hear it a couple of weeks later? How far along were you?

Re: Hearing hb vs. Seeing hb

  • We saw it on the u/s at 11 weeks.  We heard it through the u/s machine at 13 weeks.  We heard it on the doppler at 10 weeks.  I never had anything earlier than that.  The u/s techs said you can't hear the hc on their machine for a while, usually its just an electronic beat mimicking the image.

  • I saw baby's heartbeat several weeks (maybe a full month or more) before I heard it.  In fact I think I heard babies heartbeat around 12-14 weeks, and I saw babies heartbeat at 8 weeks.

  • The u/s machine can "see" the heartbeat and then assign a sound to it. I didn't truly hear that actual heartbeat until the NT scan. Before then, I saw the heartbeat, and "heard" the sound that the u/s machine puts out.

  • To my understanding, what we "hear" early on (like my u/s yesterday) is the machine simulating the noise based on the image. My tech did it just to make me feel better. It was nice, even if not "real". This was never done during my last pregnancy when we saw the hb.

This. No one hears the actual hb on an u/s, that machine does not pick up sound. It's just a computer simulation based on the visual rhythm.

We saw the hb at 5 weeks, 5 days and then heard it at 12 weeks. My OB wouldn't even try the doppler before that, because he said it's too hit or miss and he didn't see any reason to cause panic when we had seen it the week before.

  • Yes.  That happened to me.  It came through loud and clear a week later.  Don't stress.

  • We "heard" and saw it at our 6w u/s.  But I've been told that the sound on the u/s machine that early is just an echo or something and that it is actually too early to hear it.

  • I first saw the h/b at just over 6w at the RE. When I went to my OB at 10w, we could see the h/b but couldn't hear it with the doppler yet. The following week we were able to hear it with the doppler. At week 12 it took a while to find again- the nurse said my baby is a "hider". :)
