What did you do before becoming sahm?

And do you plan to return to it or do something else at some point? What do you plan to do, how long do you plan to sh?

Re: What did you do before becoming sahm?

  • I am a behavior therapist and special education teacher. I do some consult work now, but with the education crisis in texas I am not sure I will ever get to go back full time in a school district like I want to.

  • I was in sales for a large corporation, and I hated it.  I was about to go back to school for a Masters in Non-profit Management, but the BFP sort of changed my plans.  I hope to return to school one day and eventually work in the non-profit sector.  I'd like to wait until DS (and future LO's) are in school.
  • I was a legal admin.  I don't think I'll return to it unless my event planning business goes south in the future (which hopefully only GROWS now that i'm a sahm!)

  • I worked at a bank and I was a personal care attendant for a friend who was in an accident and as a result needs almost constant adult supervision/assistance.

I won't go back to the bank simply because the commute sucked.  Unfortunately, I probably won't go back to being a PCA either as they live near my hometown (same as the bank), but I won't rule it out as I'd love to see the family more.  However, I have to see what happens with our business, I may just wind up taking more of a part in that...

  • I was an executive assistant.  I'm in grad school finishing my Masters in Education.  My bachelors is actually Criminal Justice so nothing ties together.  I plan to start teaching in 2012 (whether it's full-time in a school district or subbing) when DS starts kindergarten.

  • Before being a SAHM I underwrote FHA and VA loans for a large mortgage company.  I've been contacted a few times (as recently as last month) about work at home underwriting because being a DE Underwriter is a pretty attractive skill in this market but I can't do it now and still give my full attention to my kids who are home or in and out of preschool.  If it was an option when they are all in school full time I'd definitely consider it. Otherwise I'd like to get into something either working in a school district so I'd have the same hours and summers off with the kids or a very, ver part time retail kind of job doing a few hours a day while the kiddos are in class.  Not sure what I'd do during the summer then though so that might be tough.  We'll see... plenty of time to figure it out!

  • I was in sales - my company sold a service/product that was very specific to workers' compensation carriers and their responsibility to comply with Medicare's new regulations under SCHIP legislation.  It was a fun job, and I loved it, but there's no way I'll ever go back.

DH and I plan on homeschooling our kids, so I won't ever go back to work in a conventional sense.

  • I worked in tv. I would love to go back to it, but would have to commute to NY which I cant imagine doing with 2 kids. I may have to try something new.
  • I worked in corporate finance as a director and a manager for a very large company.  It is hard for me to imagine going back to that while the kids are around.  I don't see that happening.  I may go to work for one of the Universities near my house or for the CDC, which is also close by and has a lot of transferable jobs that would use my previous skills.  Those don't pay nearly as much as I was making before, but that would be ok, if they were flexible.  Corporate Finance is about as flexible as a rock.
  • I had 3 different careers before having DD. Graphic designer, then advertising sales, then real estate. I didn't like any of them and the $ wasn't worth a job I didn't like. Once our youngest is in school, I will do something with children. I may have to get a masters before that happens.
  • I bought office buildings as an investment for a family living abroad.

I will do something entrepreneurial, not related to real estate. Loved my last job, but no longer passionate about it.

No time frame. I spent 6 months last year working on a food business with a girlfriend, very fulfilling and then wrapped it up, would happily do something like that again.

  • I worked for a high end department store as Senior Executive Merchandising Manager and I will never go back. I can't be the best mom I can be with working the hours required, the traveling and the STRESS.

  • I was a Lobbyist for Military Health Care and a Patient Advocate for my association.

Depending on where we retire, I will try to get back into the Patient Advocacy.  But each state has its own rules regarding the credentialing.

  • I was a manager in the real estate tax group for one of the big 4.  I'm 99% sure I will never go back because of the hours.  There was a large portion of the year that I actually enjoyed what I did.  However, my husband is also in public accounting so if I ever went back to E&Y neither of us would see our child/children.

I worked at Bloomingdales when I was in high school and my husband really wants me to work there again once the kids are in school.  He wants the discount more than I do.

  • I was a registered nurse, I plan to eventually go back very minimally doing part time work once DD and any future children are in full time school.  Hopefully finding a job that I can work only when they are in school, if not, then I will continue to SAH.

  • I was a teacher and nope I don't plan on going back to it. I'll definitely do something when the kids are older and in school full time, but I don't know what it will be or even if it will be paid work.

  • I work in mental health.  I work one day a week right now.

I will only work if I can work it out so that my life is my life, and my job is a job.  It was the other way around for too long.

  • I taught high school French and Spanish. I would LOVE to go back once the kids (we'd like at least 3 more) are through elementary school, but I'm not sure that will happen.  It would have to be the right school and the right position. I really enjoyed teaching, but staying home with my kids is higher on my priority list.

  • I managed a financial institution before deciding to leave for the Welfare Department(9-5 so we could start TTC and not worry about my crazy scedule).  I left the Welfare Department to substitute teach, then left to go back to being a full time student(as I was my first couple of years managing the financial institution) and to stay home with DS#1.  I graduated with my degree in Elem. Ed. a month before DS#2 arrived.  I plan to get my master's online before my first year of teaching, which will be when DS#2 enters pre-school and DS#1 is entering first grade(four years from now).

  • I was a Senior Auditor, 3rd year, and CPA for one of the Big 4 and will never return to a job in Corporate Accounting. As JOEBunny so eloquently and accurately put it: Corporate is about as flexible as a rock! ha :)  Seriously though, how much I traveled, the inconsistency in hours, the constant last-minute changes, and the hard deadlines at the mercy of my clients would send me to an early grave.

I can't say I'll never work within my field of Accounting again, I just can't currently see myself returning to work at all at this point.

  • I worked as an attorney.  I doubt I'll return FT to it, will probably continue doing divorce mediations part time after the kids are in school.
    SAHM to DD1 (7), DS (5) and DD2 (1)
  • Accounting at a car dealership. I will go back to accounting but not a car dealership.
  •

AlmostJen- Holy cow I could have written that post.  I hated doing divorces. I will never go back to a firm working fulltime.

I actually work 4 to 8 hours a week doing child visitation mediation bt divorced/ing couples.  I only do it to pay off my student loans and as soon as they are paid off I will leave the legal  profession for good.

  • I was a paralegal for several years and loved the work.  Unfortunately, I kept finding myself at firms where the office politics annoyed the living hell out of me and so I got out of legal all together.

I wound up at a small company as an office manager and also supported one of the two owners of the business.  I was there for 11.5 years.  I do plan to go back to work in a year or so, and am looking to make a move to a much larger company.  I was bored out of my mind at the last place that I worked and because it was such a small company, there was nowhere for me to go.  I want to go to a company where I can show what I am capable of and that has room for advancement.  Eventually, I plan to end up in Operations or HR.  I feel that a large company may not hire me for those positions, based on my experience in running an office with only 12 people, so I will most likely start out as an executive assistant and work my way up from there.

  • I was an inclusive education teacher and an early literacy specialist.  I may go back to teaching or I'd like to become a consultant/inservice provider.  I've also considered opening my own preschool.  I won't go back to work until Eva is in school full-time.

  • Another teacher here. I worked in both special education and traditional ed, with mainstreamed students in Kindgergarten and then first grade. I also finished my M.Ed a few weeks after DD1 was born. While I loved my job, I don't know if I'll go back. I am considering pursuing my EDD or PhD in education or possibly looking to work at the local children's museum in some educational capacity.

Blogging about boobs, babies, bed lust & everything in between since 2007.
  • Speech-language pathologist - in the few years before becoming SAHM, I was working in a private clinic that offered OT, PT, and ST (because I actually have some background in each and love collaborating).  I also did State EI treatment for the under 3 population.  And worked with kids in a private school.

And do you plan to return to it or do something else at some point? Probably part-time, although I had "had" it with insurance companies and the ridiculous and redundant paperwork/meetings that kept me doing more "busy" work than treatment.  I have so many interests, I am never sure what I really want to do :)

how long do you plan to sh? Until my kids are all in school, and then if I return to work, I still want a schedule that allows me to help in the classroom/with scouts/etc

  • I was a personal assistant to one of the now-Iron Chefs.  No, I will not be doing that again.  I plan to SAH indefinitely.
  • I was a third grade teacher.  I might go back to teaching someday.  I'm not sure if I would do it full time or sub.  Or maybe teach preschool.  Or have an in-home daycare.  Or work at my church's children's ministry.  So much that I want to do in the future! Wink

I've always said that I would go back to work once my youngest stars school, but now I'm not so sure.  It depends on what I end up doing, I guess.  I'd like to be an active parent even when they're in school, do the whole room-mom thing, volunteer as a Girl Scout Leader, etc.  I'd hate to be available for my older kids and not my youngest, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all works out.

  • I have a degree in education and before staying home I worked in education in several different capacities. When my youngest is in school full time I will go back to work, hopefully working in education with hours that allow me to be home with the kids before and after school.

  • I am an archivist.  I worked on a project position 2 days a week for 6 months last spring and applied for something similar this winter, but didn't get it.  I am holding off on applying for anything else until after we have another baby and said baby is done nursing- I have no desire to deal with pumping.

Eventually I would like to return to work part time...and eventually full time down the road, but I don't have a set timeline at this point.

  • Risk Management for an energy company. I worked in credit risk, trading compliance, enterprise risk, and internal audit. I would like to go back.
  • I'm not officially SAHM until after LO is born, but I'm currently a leasing agent at an apartment complex.  I'm also in school full time for Human Development and Family Studies.

I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to work, and if I do, it won't be to my old job.  I'd likely consider getting my master's degree before going back to work.

  • I was a caseworker to developementally disabled individuals.  I won't be going back- I worked for a great agency but the work was beyond stressful and I had to go into homes with horrible conditions.  I saw a lot of kids that sufferered and I couldn't even comprehend watching that now that I am a mother.

In a few years I'm going to get my Masters to work in a school setting.  I'm leaning towards something like a reading teacher/resource room.  My bachelor's degree is in Psyc and I can teach with that as long as I get my master's in teaching so at least I didn't waste my whole undergrad career!

My DH is a teacher and I want the holidays/summers off like him to spend with the kids!!

  • Retail management. It was intended to be temporary (I lost my job as an event coordinater) while i job hunted but then I got pregnant. It wasn't a job I loved (or even really liked most days) so it was easy to quit. I have zero plans to go back to it.
  • No career, just a few jobs.  I was a nanny for 3 years, retail management (gourmet grocery) for 8 years and then program director for a children's gym for 1 year.  I would definitely open my own gym if I were able to find the funding.

  • Civil Engineer. I managed large-scale ($30million+) construction projects.

Do NOT plan on returning. I loved it, but it is not a family-oriented job. I worked 12+ hour days with an hour commute each way.

I plan on staying home until my youngest is in 1st grade. When DS starts K, I am taking AN ENTIRE YEAR OFF - I think I deserve some free time and DH is in agreement.

  • Oh no.  Why never again? Did you hate it?   I just signed up to start taking coding classes in the Summer.  Right now I run a licensed daycare out of my home, but when LO goes to school, I want to be ready to do something else.
