3rd Trimester

Stupid question but how do I know if I'm in labour!

Or going into labout? Has anyone else felt like this? I have a pretty high pain tollerance, I havent felt any BH so I can't say I am having contractions but then again I don't know what they would feel like!

I am 37 weeks but baby is measuring 40 weeks (always been 3 weeks ahead) my Doctor keeps saying she thinks i'll be early but I never take her word for it babies come when they are ready. I thought I might have lost my mucus plug like a week ago but when I called my doctor she didn't seem concerned since there was no blood. I have been getting period like cramps and lower back pain all day but I know thats also normal at 37 weeks. I guess I'll know if my water breaks or if I start bleeding other than that nothing I can do but wait anyways right?

  • Start timing these contractions you're having, if they get stronger and more frequent call your doctor.

  • It is labor if the period like cramps and back ache come and go in a rhythm.  Are they time-able?  My mother warned me of this because she was early with all three of us siblings and they all were just period like cramps until her water broke 20 minutes before birthing all of us.

  • I don't think they are timeable, they seem kind of constant . I feel stupid that I don't even know! I do have a doctors appointment in a few hours so I'll find out for sure then. But yea I haven't really been crampy during pregnancy but today definitly feeling some discomfort. It's not unbearable though.
  • 5-1-1 if you are having 5 contractions within 1 hour that last 1 minute it is time to go to the hospital.

    This.

  • I want to clarify something: only 10% of women's water break, most of women's first signs of labor is contractions. Also, some women do not lose their mucus plug prior to labor and they don't know when they lost it.

I have 2 kids (ages 3 and 4). I noticed losing my MP with my daughter (my youngest) at 37 weeks--I went into labor 2 weeks later. I did not notice losing my MP with my son.  I have braxton hicks contractions with both kids for weeks. The difference between BH and early signs of labor for me was that with early labor my back would start hurting, then the pain would move around my sides to my front and my belly would clinch tight. It would stop, then start all over again. When I had BH's my belly would tighten and I would have a little cramping, but I never had the back pain. (After several hours of full fledged labor these pains in my back got more and more painful to the point where I couldn't walk and I would have to stop and breath).  Also, it's very normal to feel sick or have diarrhea in the days leading up to pregnancy, so watch for that.  Good luck!

  • Thank you!

Like I said I am going to my doctor in a few hours so I am not too concerned, but I have been feeling a little funny this week so well see maybe it's comming soon.

  • I thought the 5-1-1 rule was contractions 5 minutes apart for 1 hour and they last 1 minute each.

the difference between 5 minutes apart and 20 minutes apart (especially since 5 in one hour could actually mean something very irregular) is kind of drastic.

  • If you are wondering, you're probably not (or are in really early labor).

It will hurt, alot. Then you are in labor.

This is what I was told as well.  I wonder if she mis-typed that.  Or maybe misunderstood it.

This is what I am thinking lol. As long as I am not dying in pain I am probably ok lol.

  • Call your doc when you feel something has changed. Doesn't need to be blood, or anything TOTALLY painful. I know SEVERAL women who have had drug free births (I am also having one) and a couple of them barely knew they were in labor. They went to the hospital when they felt something had changed (more pressure on pelvic along with back pain and just didn't feel "the same").. one of my girlfriend's was 6cm when she showed up and hadn't noticed a change in contractions- she merely went in because of the above. Just trust your gut I say.

My cramping is the same way- not really timeable, just seems to be there then isn't with no real pattern.  I've felt this way for 3 weeks now so I'm used to it.  Just waiting to see when they will be timeable!
