Trouble TTC

Questions about HSG

I'm probably just paranoid, but is there any risk associated with HSG? Could it potentially cause any damage to the cervix, tubes, or uterus and make it more difficult to get pregnant?

Also, if you've had the procedure, was it painful for you?

Re: Questions about HSG

  • there is a risk of infection, thats why you have to take the antibiotics

  • I just had my HSG yesterday and it was a bit painful. It was mostly awkward until the x-ray tech pushed the dye through the tubes. It felt like really bad period cramps and a lot of pressure. It was only for a minute or two so it is bearable.

As far as risks go, there was information in the packet from my RE. It seems like there is a slight risk but the benefits of having the HSG outweigh the potential risk.

    Hope this helps!

  • Like any "procedure" there are risks but they're minimal. I didn't have to take antibiotics before or after mine, just 800 mg. Ibuprofen about 30 mins. before. It wasn't "fun" but for me it wasn't any more painful that period cramps. I do feel like one of the lucky ones though because some women have said it was very painful for them.

Some studies show that you're actually MORE fertile 3 months after your HSG because it "flushes" your tubes and uterus out.GL!

  • My HSG was not bad.  I took advil before.  The dye made me feel a bit sick, but the rest was similar to period cramps.  I did go home and take a nap after.  Good Luck!

  • My HSG was not bad at all.. I know alot of women have cramps or sharp pain. It only takes about 5min from start to finish.
  • I was prepared for the worst but went right back to the office afterwards. I didn't take antibiotics but did take 4 Aleve.
