future BW question

Warning: I am hormonal and right now this seems like such a huge problem and it's making me crazy!

I am registered for a Moby and am fairly certain I will get one at my shower coming up. I plan on using this for a while with my nb but I am just not sure what to get after that. I really LOVE the look of all the beautiful woven wraps and the fact that they are so versatile. My problem is that I'm afraid they will be too hot in the FL summer heat that is already creeping up on us here. If it weren't for the heat, a woven would be my first choice.

I want to be able to wear my baby to walk the dog, at my older kids' baseball practices, etc. I hate the heat! I know vats are recommended for summers but it just seems like something with less fabric (a ring sling or soft carrier/mei tai) will be cooler. What do you think? Should I just wait and see how the Moby works for us and decide from there later on?

Also, there is a store here that sells lots of beautiful "hippy" things (local artists' work, cloth diapers, tea, etc) and has some soft carriers also. I think they are locally made. How would I know if they are good quality or if they will work for me?  I am going to try to go look at them this week sometime.

Sorry to be such a mess. This is just all of a sudden really important to me and I feel like I need to get this decision made... one more thing checked off my list since baby is almost here. It might really be the hormones  Embarrassed

Re: future BW question

  • Last summer I used a maya adjustable pouch sling, which worked great.  It was similar to a woven material and very breathable.  I've also used a mei tai and have a woven that will be used throughout the summer as well.  As long as you dress the baby lightly (diaper only or diaper and onsie) and then you in a tank top or what have you when you are outside you should be fine.  Not sure what part of FL you are in, but I'm in Jax and while it's hot outside it's always cold inside because of the a/c blasting in stores/buildings.

  • After I was done using the Sleepy Wrap (like the Moby just different material) wgen my daughter was an older infant I switchted over to the Amy Coe Peanut Shell sling...which I LOVED used till my daughter was a toddler, (didnt prefer as a newborn though) and plan on doing the same all over again with baby #2 on the way.

    Good luck :)

  • A thin woven wrap will be way cooler than the moby.  Vatanais are my top pick but Ellaroos are also great for warm weather.  If you want super thin in a wrap, the Bali Baby Breeze (which is gauze, not a woven) is the way to go.

As for the locally made carriers - what kind are they??

The reason I was going with the Moby is pretty much price and availability. I thought it would also be a good way to learn wrapping. I would love a Vatanai but I'm just not sure I can talk DH into spending $100+ on it, even on TBW FSOT.

I'm not sure what they are, I only saw them through the window because the store was closed when I went. They looked like maybe an Asian style like a mei tai? I'm going to go back later this week (it's on the other side of town) but just didn't know what to look for when I went.

  • I would actually recommend against the moby considering that you are in florida and will be having a warm weather baby.  The moby will be hot!

I would recommend a Balibaby Stretch.  Same concept as the moby but will be much cooler for the two of you.

  • I checked out the balibaby stretch and breeze and I think that it what I would be looking for. They both say they're good for hot weather, good for newborns, and good for front, hip, and back carries. Does anyone know how much warmer the sretch would be than the breeze? Is one better for single layer wraps? The site lists the stretch as "ther favorite" for back carries, but I thought you weren't supposed to use stretchy material for back carries.

It also says both are good for new wrappers, but that the stretch is a little more forgiving of "sloppy wrapping". The price range for these is better for me than a lot of other wraps though. Any thoughts about which one may be better? I know it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day, but you ladies seem to really know your stuff and  I really, really appreciate the help and advice. Thank you!
