Baby Names

Please be honest about this name

Otis

We tend to love traditional names. Our DS is William and other names we love are Henry, Jack, etc. But for some reason I just love the name Otis.  Would love to hear other opinions on it, and totally won't be offended if you think it is awful. Please share. :) Thanks!

  • I like Henry and Jack a lot more. Otis reminds me of a bassett hound...or a dog with a lot of rolls like a pug.

  • Otis is one of the largest elevator companies in the world, I think.. or at least America. The name sounds very farmer-ish to me.

  • Honestly the first thing I thought of was Milo & Otis (that old Disney movie).  Not a big fan, I love Jack tho!

  • Henry or Jack would be my vote. I do not like Otis.. it does remind me of a dog name.

  • Sorry but Otis seems really dorky.  I think he would be jealous of William's name.

I actually know someone with a Bassett Hound named Otis.

Sorry, but I think it's...not a good name.  Love Henry though!

  • Definitely NMS.

  • I don't like Otis. Although it does remind me of Otis Spunkmeyer cookies.
  • I'm with a lot of others on this name.  Actually, one of my cousins has a Boxer and his name is Otis.  Sorry!  It is really up to you and your SO, at the end of the day.

I really don't like it. It's one of those names where if I heard it at the daycare, I would come home and tell DH "This poor kid, you would never guess what his name is."

  • Yes.  I am SO over all the Jack/Henry/Max's running around.  Otis is strong, masculine and positively refreshing!

This is my initial reaction as well.  My friend used the name Linus, which I thought was a bit strange at first, but it totally works.

  • I love it.

Exactly! I really like the name. We have a family friend named Otis and while he is 70 years old he is the smartest and sweetest man I've ever known. I have wonderful connotations with the name. I also think it's very German.

  • I love Otis. It is traditional, but uncommon. I have a nephew named Jack, and I'm noticing it's very popular. Henry's also a great, less popular choice.

this. Also, I know a pug named Otis, so it's an even stronger association for me, haha.

That being said, I think the right person could pull it off.  (My name is often called a "dog name", but I love it and the people who know me would probably not associate it with dogs anymore)

  • I like Otis!  And I like Henry too.

    Jack- way too popular, IMO.

  • It's a good name! it's actually my dog's name lmao...but, don't let the change your opinion...we name our pets REAL people names such as Phoebe, Otis, and Ayla

  • I LOVE THE NAME OTIS.  And as for the folks who say the name reminds them of a puppy - that's okay!  Think about the name Max?  Just because you may have met a dog named Max, or Otis, doesn't mean that your son won't be able to claim that name and offer a different association!

  • I really like Otis.  Dd (she's 2) has an Otis in her class and he's just the cutest little thing.  It is an old name and I can honestly say that was the first time I'd heard it for a little guy.  I find it kind of endearing.

  • I think it would be a cute name for a pet, but I just don't like it for a human.  Sorry.
  • I think Henry sounds perfect with William. You could always use Otis as a middle name.
