3wk old with cold

My LO has had a stuffy nose for the past 2 days.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help her breathe better?  I've been using a nasal aspirator on her, and using that "Little Noses" spray - but the poor thing sounds just horrible.  She does okay sometimes during the day - but then all of a sudden she basically has to snort so she can breathe - I feel so bad for her!

I have put her in the bathroom & run the shower to get her some steam & that helps for a small amount of time.

Does anyone else have any other remedies that work really well?!  She is eating "okay" just takes her quite some time to take her bottle down since she can't really breathe.

  • Nose Freda.  Its an amazing little device for sucking out the boogers.  It looks gross, but the snot cannot get into your mouth.  Doesn't go inside the nose like the bulb so you don't have to worry about hurting LO.  Gets the stuff out you can hear them struggling with but can't see yet.  Seriously, they will feel so much better when you can clear their nasal passages completely.  The saline drops help loosen everything so keep using those.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • sounds like you are doing everything I can think of..Ugh I think my lo has a little bit of congestion/cold too..it's so hard at this age when they can't tell us what is wrong..my ds didn't get his first cold until he was 9 months..feel so bad for dd.  Hope your LO feels better soon..The only other thing (can't remember if you wrote this) but try keeping LO elevated :)
  • Get a Nosefrida.  You will be amazed at how much stuff comes out of such a tiny nose and your baby will actually be able to breath.  Put a drop of saline in or use the saline spray about 30 seconds before using and kind of wiggle it in a circular motion, it's incredible...seriously.

Maybe also adding a cool mist humidifier would help.

  • I agree with the nose frida. I bought based on recommendation from the board and it is crazy how huge these boogers are that come out. I have no idea where they are hiding in his tiny little head. Also, my MIL (she is jamaican and has old wives tale remedies) said that if you get eucalytus oil, put 3 drops on a cotton ball, put it in a nylon foot and hang it over where they sleep it helps. I read up on it and there are health properties associated with it. and I was willing to try anything. It could have been a placebo effect, but I do think it helped. My baby just sounded horrible when awake and would occasionally snort, but when eating or asleep seemed to breath ok.
