3rd Trimester

35 weeks and meds to stop labor??

Last night my SIL wen to l&d for contractions.  She is 35 weeks, 2 days.  She was 3 cm dialated and 50% effeced.  The docotr gave her meds to stop labor.   Anyone else ever hear of this?  I thought that if you went into labor after 34 weeks they woudn't do anything to stop it.  I delivered both of mine at 35 weeks, 3 days and 35 weeks 5 days and was never offered anything to stop labor.  We even go to the same doctor.  Just wondering what other people experienced.

 Thanks!

Re: 35 weeks and meds to stop labor??

  • I was put on procardia to stop contractions at 32 weeks with the expectation that I will stop them at 36 weeks (this week).  I can see how they would want to keep her LO in there a little bit longer since she isn't full term yet.  He doctor probably evaluated the situation and determined that it was best to keep LO inside a little longer rather than deliver and the potential for baby to be in the NICU (not that all early babies end up there, but there's always the chance when they're early).  I wouldn't stress too much about it, sounds like her doctor fully assessed the situation and has hers and LO's best interest in mind.

  • i went in at 35 weeks and had the same thing happen to me with contractions and they stopped them too. My doctor said the baby needed a little more time to grow so if they could stop them they would try.
  • I have always heard 36 weeks but my ob said 37 is her preference. Babies born at 35 weeks can still have a lot of problems, so I would want my labor stopped if I went in to labor that early.

  • I gave birth to my DD at 35 weeks and 2 days. It was never offered to stop my labor...
  • My last Progesterone injection is at 35 weeks and the doc told me that after that they will let me go into labor and not stop it.  I am guessing that I will be delivering my little boy at 36 weeks.

  • I was given terbutaline at 35 weeks and then got steroid injections and magnesium drip. I then went home on terbutaline oral tabs until 36/37 weeks. But I pushed for the meds. I think  my dr would have let me go but I work in the NICU and I refuse to have a 35 weeker. They can be fine but they can also have a lot of issues and I wanted my LO to stay in a little longer. I then made it to term.
  • i think it also depends on the hospital. my hospital stopped my labor until 36 weeks because they didnt want to have to send the baby to another hospital since it wouldnt have been full term and a NICU team would have been needed. i was on terbulatine pump and magnesium from 32-36 weeks and finally got taken off the pump.

she should be thankful they stopped her labor. better to bake a few more weeks and have a healthy baby that doesnt need tubes and IVs. not every baby is ok when born at 35 weeks. it isnt worth the risk.

  • I think a lot of OBs will make an effort to stop labor prior to 36-37 weeks.

My DD was born at 35w4d.  They did not try to stop labor because my water had broken.  Had my water not broken they would have tried to stop it and help me get to 37 weeks.

  • It depends on the doctor and the situation- 36 weeks is the standard as there is no additional benefit to getting the steroid injections (the biggest reason for stopping labor). Some labors can't be stopped, for example if there was PROM or if there are other medical issues. The reality is no doctor wants a baby born before 37 weeks- there's still a risk for complications. But there are certain issues that are better handled in the NICU or under doctor supervision on the outside and somewhere between 34w0d and 36w6d calls need to be made based on the individual case.

  • my OB told me 37-41 weeks is when they will just let you go naturally. 36 or before, they will try to stop it, depending on medical condition and baby's measurements and test to date.
