Baby Showers

Register or not?

I need some advice. I feel really strange on registering for baby items with this pregnancy.  It just seems like I am begging for gifts.

My MIL mentioned when MH and I told her we were PG that she wanted to throw us a shower, only this isn't my first child.  It's actually my 5th.  Before you start sending me hate mail, let me just say the ages of my children are 21, 19, 17 and 14 years old. This is a very, very unexpected PG.  My DH and I were not planning on any more children so I literally have only the changing table left(which my son uses as a dresser) and a few handmade blankets that were made specifically for each child.

So my question is should I register? or not? I am leaning toward not and just be glad for anything I receive.

Re: Register or not?

  • Maybe register for a few essentials, like bottles and stuff.  If you're having a shower, people are probably going to want to buy you things off of a registery.

  • I think in your case you would be okay to register and people wouldn't think it was tacky. Remember, everyone that would be invited it family/friends not strangers so they especially know that it was a surprise and that you have no baby items. I would register for some specific things and keep the list small and necesssary. Anything else you recieve is extra. If you don't register, you might end up with a lot of duplicates, useless gifts, or hopefully gift cards.

  • Yes, register.  Remember, a registry is only a wish list. People can use it or not use it.  It doesn't FORCE anyone to use it, or buy you a gift at all.

  • Register to your hearts content. As PP mention people can buy from it or not. However you also may receive completion coupons which can save you some $$ on the things you do buy.

You can register for small things and then after the shower register for larger things you plan on buying yourself so that you can get the discount.

  • Go ahead and register!  If you feel weird about it, leave off the non-essentials/designer type things and save up for these items yourself (as others have mentioned, you could still put them on your registry after the shower so you can get the completion discount).  Honestly though, I wouldn't think of this shower as any less needed than a first baby.  Congratulations!

  • I would not have a problem seeing a registry for someone who's youngest child is 14.  I like to buy off a registry so would appreciate it.  Looks like you will need a lot to make the new arrival comfortable...but one thing you won't need is a babysitter!  lol
  • register at a store even if it for the small everyday items. people are going to buy you things anyways and it helps giving them a guide line to what you need.

  • I would register. After the shower you usually get coupons for all the things you didnt get so even if you didnt get much off of your registry you can still use the coupons.
