3rd Trimester

whats the rule about painting?

We just signed a lease on a new apartment today! (woohoo!!) the place is a freakin castle compared to ours now, but we need to paint. I was going to have my dad paint but I feel like I want to get it done sooner so im going to enlist a few friends to help ( they dont know that yet but how can say no to a preg girl) and im a control freak so I would like to do my share too.

Is there a certain paint I should be using? Do you know if it matters to the baby what kind of paint i use?

If it matters ill be 34 weeks on monday

Re: whats the rule about painting?

  • I've read that using low-VOC paint is recommended but most say to avoid it completely.  It's really a question for your doctor.  My DH painted in our house and I wore a ventilation mask during the priming, not the painting, because the fumes were much worse.
  • Loading the player...
  • Interior latex paint. Brand doesn't matter. Just open the windows and make sure the place is well-ventilated.

That being said, you can always buy "low odor" paints and crap like that, but at the end of the day, it's still paint, and you still have to follow the same rules. So save the money, pick out some colors you like at Home Depot (or wherever) and have fun!

  • I helped dh paint the baby's room last week. We did use the no VOC type of paint. Make sure there is a lot of air ventalation open windows if you can.

    If anything ask your Dr.

  • best advice i got was not to drink it lol

kidding aside...i was told low VOC, keep the area well ventilated and  take breaks often.

  • We just bought a new house and I haven't been allowed in because they are still painting. They bought low-VOC paint but Behr doesn't make VOC Free paint anymore BOO. You really should avoid doing it at all. Let others do it for you.

I have found that with buying a house, it's best to do it when you are pregnant....no one expects you to do a d@mn thing! It's awesome!

  • I have been enlisting friends and family to paint I dont want to take any chances

  • I had my husband do most of it, but I did the second coat (because it still wouldn't be done otherwise). He protested and told me not to but then I did it anyways. We used Olympic Premium from Lowe's. It's zero VOC (including colorant!) and only about $20/gallon. They have over 1000 colors and the one we picked, Blue Dusk, turned out awesome.

This.  At Lowes, both Valspar and Olympic are no VOC.  I painted the nursery (minus any ladder work) with both brands - and all is well.  The biggest problem that could arise is you could become dizzy, so just don't over do it, keep the window open, and keep it low VOC.  Interior latex paint is not toxic like oil paint is.

    Stay off the ladder though!

  • I painted the nursery when I was like 25ish weeks and I plan on painting my living room tomorrow. From everything I read about it as long as you're in a well ventilated area you should be good to go. If you feel off, stop.

  • The guy at Lowe's told us to put 7 or 8 drops of pure vanilla extract (not the imitation stuff) in the paint and mix it well.  Apparently this decreases the paint fumes.  I haven't tried it yet, but I figure it can't hurt.  I won't do the painting just to be on the safe side, but our house is so small I know I will be able to smell it.

  • My OB said as long as the smell doesn't bug me go for it.  She did warn about going up and down the ladder and painting the ceiling for balance reasons.

I did all of the cutting in for #1 and this baby and DH is doing all of the rolling.

  • I painted the baby's room and didn't think twice about it. I bought Lowe's Valspar brand, took lots of breaks, and kept the window cracked. It was actually good exercise!

  • We painted when I was 26 weeks, my doc didn't have any problem with it..... kept the windows open, took breaks when needed, and made sure to drink tons of water to keep hydrated. When I asked the paint people at Home Depot, they said that pretty much all of the paints they sell are low VOC and some have no VOC.
