Cloth Diapering

Question about pre-folds - really bulky?

I've finally started to use CD's with my LO.  Yesterday was our first full day in them and we had no blow-outs or leaks....yay!

I'm using the pre-folds from Green Mountain Diapers, yellow edge in a size small Thirsties or Bummis.  I fold the prefold in thirds and lay it in the diaper. Boy is it bulky!!  There is a little extra length so I have to fold it back a little which creates a serious amount of bulk and the diaper hardly wants to close.  Is this how pre-folds are supposed to work or am I doing something wrong?

Darn! I didn't think to buy infant size, do you think it would be worth is to buy a dozen? She's almost 2 months old and about 10 lbs.

  • i don't know that infants are much smaller than yellows. i think your problem is the trifolding with them. mine fit trimmer because the bulk was distributed around her bottom with the fold.

So you wrap the prefold around her and pin?  I tried that once yesterday and it barely fit around her!  She's not a big girl, I might have been doing it wrong :(

  • Did you look at the different folds on the green mountain website?  I used infant diapers from a different company, so I am not sure how the sizes vary, but the "baby" ones I bought, just now fit DD at 7 mos without being huge.  I really didn't mind, but I did end up buying 6 pocket diapers to use, and fell in love with them.  I now only use the prefolds when I am out of the other diapers.
  • i don't pin, i use a snappi. either with the angel wing or jelly roll (side wall) fold:

  • For what it's worth, I think DS is about 10.5 lbs right now and we're right at the border between orange edge and yellow edge.  We use Thirsties covers and I can usually just get the yellow edge to fit if I work it in well and fan out the back (which I want to do anyway to help catch poop).

  • Infant size (green edge) is the same length as yellow edge, but narrower. It sounds like your main problem is the length, not the width, so I'd stick with what you have. They will be a little bulky for now, but she'll grow into them quickly.

DS is one year old and has been in infant size since birth, so obviously, they are a lot trimmer on him now than they were when he was a newborn. In fact, they are probably his trimmest diaper. Here's a picture from just a few weeks ago:
