Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Come in if you give your LO meat...

a) Which meats have you tried? and how did you cook them?

b) Did you puree them?  Did they freeze well?

c) If you did not puree, how small did you chop up the meat?

d)  How old was LO?

We have gone through all the major veggies and fruits at this age and are looking to try meat soon (at 8 months).  Just curious how others are introducing it.  TIA!

Re: Come in if you give your LO meat...

  • I am no super mom so I buy the Gerber meats. She threw up on all of them. I stopped and reintroduced a few weeks later, she took chicken and apples last night and didn't get sick. So I will stick with that for awhile and then try some others again some time. I don't force it though. The texture and the smell is terrible!

  • a) Which meats have you tried? and how did you cook them?

Chicken, turkey, and pork. I bake it.

    b) Did you puree them?  Did they freeze well?

    No

    c) If you did not puree, how small did you chop up the meat?

I use my judgement, but the pieces are pretty little.

    d)  How old was LO?

    7.5 months

  • At 6 months, we started her on meats - the stage 2 Earth's Best Organic varieties, like Chicken Mango Risotto, Tender Beef Spinach, Apple Chicken Compote, etc.  She loved them.  Once she hit about 8 months, she could eat almost anything (even with no teeth), so I started giving her pieces of chicken and turkey, just torn up into bits.  She gums things really well, and feeds herself like a champ.  :)

  • I haven't actually given LO the chicken yet, but I've already prepared it. I cooked a whole chicken in the crockpot and saved a big chunk of the breast to use for baby food and DH and I ate the rest. I pureed it and had to use quite a bit of water to get it smooth. Then I froze it in ice cube trays. I popped them out after they froze and put them in a freezer bag. They froze perfectly and popped out of the tray even easier than the veggies/fruits did. LO will be 7 months tomorrow and I plan to give him chicken very soon, maybe in a few days. I read on wholesomebabyfood.com that it's good to use the dark meat because it has more iron, but I used breast meat.

  • Blaise has had chicken, pork chop, ground beef. The chicken was shredded. We've also given him tiny pieces, maybe pinky size. He has had meat since he was probably 7 mos.

  • Keagen has been having meat since he was 7 months, and I've been giving him the Beech Nut 2 foods meats.  He has eaten everything I've given him so far, he's not picky! His favorites have been the chicken and apples and macaroni and beef with vegetables.  I'm waiting until he gets a tooth to give him more solid stuff.

  • I'm actually making some right now.  I put a chicken breast into a pan and just cover it with water and pop the lid on.  I poach it on med heat until it is no longer pink in the center.  Take it out and chop it up, then put it into a food processor until it is a consistent texture.  Then add a bit of the poaching liquid in to the desired consisitency (usually about 1/4 c or so).  Fill an ice cube tray up, and transfer to a freezer bag when frozen.  Use within a month.  To serve, thaw them out in the microwave or in the fridge - never on the counter as it can grow bacteria.  My girls like it mixed with sweet potatoes, or apple.

Felix has had chicken, beef, lamb and venison. If you want to include fish, he has also had prawn, salmon, red cod and hoki. I haven't pur?ed them but some lamb and beef were minced meat. Non minced I cut into strips and give them to him. He usually just has it whatever way we're having it for dinner. Like last night, I made fish pie. Felix had the exact same meal except I mashed his a bit. He's been having meat since about 6.5 months.
