When to call the doctor about a cold?

DS has had a runny nose for the past two days and a little cough.  He is still sleeping okay, still really playful, nursing/eating as usual and laughing and has had no fever.  I took his temp just this morning and it did read 100.5, but they don't consider it a fever until it's 100.4 anyway.  His normal body temp is always 99 something anyway.  I did give him some Tylenol to be on the safe side.  Should I just see what his temperature does and if he starts getting moody or gets worse, I call?

*I've read elsewhere online and they said to call a doctor if they have breathing problems, eating problems or a fever that doesnt go away w/ meds in 24 hours...is this what you ladies would do too?

(My DS has reactive airway disease too...he does a preventative asthma med once a day...so whenever he gets colds I always worry more b/c of his breathing.  Right now his breathing is fine though.  We do have albuterol just in case he would wheeze).

TIA!

Re: When to call the doctor about a cold?

  • Does your pedi have a nurse on call line?  If so, I'd call them first.  Ours is free.  I just used it the other day because DD vomitted twice, but showed no other issues.  I needed to know how to keep her hydrated and what should trigger me to bring her in.  They gave me a whole slew of instructions over the phone.  DD was fine the very next day.  GL!  Sorry your little guy is dealing with this!

  • For a cold, there is nothing really that the doc can do, so unless his fever gets really high or he's showing signs of an ear infection, etc. then I'd just wait it out.

DD is the same way right now and we're using the saline spray, boogie bulb ;), a humidifier,  baby Vicks, and children's motrin to help with the fever.  We're on day 3 now so I'm hoping it starts getting better soon.

  • You also just want to watch for signs of a sinus infection. DS had a cold and a runny nose for a while and after a few weeks the mucus started turning greenish and he had a lot of discharge in his eyes. We took him to the pedi and he got antibiotics for a sinus infection.

  • here's what we watch out for, and call the dr if we see:

    - fast breathing, wheezing (DS had RSV/bronchiolitis the other week)
    - snot that's really thick and green/yellow
    - not drinking bottles/dehydration (LO should have at least 3 wet diapers/day)
    - fever that won't go down with tylenol/motrin
