Robyn got me thinking about milk

Mikey has mastered the sippy and is fine with drinking both water and milk, but he often doesn't drink the 2 cups or whatever a day is recommended. He usually drinks a couple of ounces in the morning and gets a few more with his cereal, then he gets a yogurt and a few more ounces throughout the rest of the day. Some days he's a trooper and drinks a ton, but I worry that he's not consistently getting enough.

The news that Aaron's pedi says mac n' cheese counts since M loves the cheese tortellini I give him for most lunches, but he's gone off having cheese as a snack and really doesn't like cottage cheese.

So is he getting enough? I would try to make up the difference with vitamin but he refuses it in every form :(

  • I know J's not getting enough.  He suddenly hates it and refuses to drink it.  I have thought about adding chocolate syrup to it, but am not that desperate...... yet.

Yeah, I refuse to give him flavored milk.

    And hi Shelley! Big Smile

  • I plan on asking our pedi about this next week at K's 18 mo. appt.  She drinks water and water w/ a splash of juice out of a sippy cup, but refuses to drink milk out of a sippy cup.  She has a yogurt every day and cheese (cheese stick, grilled cheese, mac&cheese, or pizza) most days.  I'm concerned as to whether this is enough dairy.  I've even offered her strawberry and chocolate milk in a sippy cup, but she has refused these too.

  • It's mostly about calcium, right and Vit. D? There are other excellent sources calcium than milk, like soy milk, spinach and molasses. If Maddie doesn't take to or tolerate goat's milk - she'll be getting her calcium from other sources.

Maybe talk to your Pedi about getting him a children's supplement with calcium/vit D supplement to be safe.

*eta* just noticed that he refuses vitamins. Have you tried the gummy vitamins? Maddie loves them (but I do cut them into bits because I am paranoid)

  • I put A's Polyvisol vitamins in his milk at night. He still drinks his milk from the bottle so that way I know he's taking the vitamins since he finishes the bottle. At daycare (twice a week) they told me he prefers to drink milk from a sippy, probably b/c the other kids do. But I tried that at home and he refused. So I think he just likes mommy to give him milk in a bottle and is OK with the sippy at daycare. Isn't that funny? I don't care too much, he'll get off the bottle eventually. That's one battle I don't feel like fighting right now, whatever gets him to drink milk is fine by me.

I have a friend that only gives her daughter strawberry-flavored organic milk. She says she won't drink any regular milk (she was breast-fed until recently). The problem with flavored milk is it only comes in 2% I believe. So her daughter is way low on the growth curve. The pedi told my friend to add butter and cheese to everything her daughter eats so she gains weight!

  • Now that Ellie is completely on regular milk, we actually have to be careful that she's not getting too much in a day because we were told no more than 16 oz a day now that she's 12 months.  A couple of 4-6 oz sippys of milk, some yogurt, a slice of cheese or whatever and boom, we're there.

Yeah, this!  Margaux would drink milk all day long if we let her.
