Cloth Diapering

A couple laundry ?'s

How many CD's can you/should you put in one load? I haven't really found anything about that (or if it even matters.)

When I get used CD's should I do anything special to them or just wash them normally before using?

FWIW...I've never CD and will be CD our new baby and going to be using the homemade detergent I found on the Eco-Friendly Family website...TIA!!

ETA: Oh yeah I forgot to ask about my washer, (which I guess is HE, but not sure.) It does an automatic fill depending on how much is in the washer, I don't actually choose the size, how does that affect washing?

  • I don't think it matters. I've never had more than enough for a large load

Some people strip or bleach, I just wash them and put them into the rotation

  • I am just learning, but several sites I have looked at say that it is a good idea to toss a few towels in the wash with the diapers to trick the washer into using more water. Some have said wet towels, some didn't specify. I have an HE frontloader. :)

  • I don't think it really matters how many, my loads are usually around 15-20. If you're doing a smaller load you might want to throw in some towels, just so the washer uses more water to make sure your diapers get clean.

For used diapers, I personally just do one normal wash before using.

  • I wash used CDs normally before using -- if there's a problem the first time I use them, THEN I strip. (Hasn't ever happened.)

I wouldn't put more than 2--25 diapers in the laundry, but I have a conventional washer that I can set at whatever water level I want. I hear people can put towels in HE washers to trick it into using more water.

  • To help make sure you get enough water with a front loader HE machine, I make sure that I put them the heavy soiled setting.  This adds more water than a normal load.  I also prewash using the quick wash function before running a normal load.  Then the dipes are wet(and heavier) with increases the amount of water in the load because it tricks the sensors.
