3rd Trimester

Baby in 99th percentile for size....eek!

We had an additional "growth-check ultrasound" on Monday (28 weeks along), and the tech said baby is measuring in the 99th percentile for size. Baby is "about 4 pounds, and should only be 2.5 pounds at this point".

Uh, should I freak out?

I'm not very big, and have only gained 19 pounds up to this point, which is exactly average and healthy...

Then my midwife says, "Yeah, ultrasounds aren't very accurate, don't worry." OK, so why do they use ultrasounds to determine size then? And why did they do the follow up US to be sure baby wasn't "too big"?

I'm a bit stressed..... :)

  • Your midwife is right. Don't freak out. Size estimates in utero have been known to be off. It's an estimate, not a direct measurement.

  • I agree, don't worry!  U/S can be WAY off for size.  DS supposedly had a 13 cm head - I delivered vaginally without major tearing or anything like that....without an epidural!  He was on the large size at 9lbs 1oz, but not the toddler-size he was predicted to be.

  • if you are eating healthy and your weight gain is healthy and everything is going as planned. i would not freak out. especially since your midwife told you that the ultrasounds are not very accurate.

  • That's about where I was (baby girl measured 4.5 pounds at 30 weeks).  My boys measured the same, and they were both 9 pounds, 5 ounces at birth.  So the perintal doc's ultrasounds were very accurate all along for me, and they are predicting another 9+ pound baby.  I was able to deliver them both naturally, they were both relatively "easy" inductions at 39 weeks 5 days.

  • yeah dont freak. my boss's son was supposed to be 14 lbs by the u/s he was born 9 at 2 weeks late
  • I wouldnt be. You're still early in your pregnacy. Baby could have hit a growth spurt earlier than other babies of the same gestational age and will slow down by the end. Or ultrasounds can be inaccurate-they can be 2lbs off in either direction.

FWIW, by ultrasound my DS was estimated to be 7lbs at birth. He was 10lbs. With my DD, she was estimated to be 9lbs at birth and was under 8lbs. They were pretty off with predicting the size of both of my kids via ultrasound, and even my fundal height wasnt an indicator-I measured on time with my large baby and 3 weeks ahead with my smaller one.
