Letter from the Geneticist

Oddly I got a letter from the geneticist today.  Jack hasn't seen him since November 2009. This is a dictation from that visit when he was 2 months old.  The letter mentions that Jack may have speech and language delays and that his pedi should watch his development and refer him to IE if needed.  Thanks Doc, by now we have figured that out.  Hmm

Re: Letter from the Geneticist

  • Oooo-kay.  Wow, that is a heck of a delay on getting that letter!  I wonder if it was just sitting on someone's desk, or what?

  • Can you call them and ask why such a delay with letter? ALso, hoe did he determine that Jack may have speach delay from looking at a 2 m.o. baby?

  • Either what Amy said or maybe it sat in limbo in the postal system. Did you check the date when the post office stamped it?  I got a letter once that was date stamped almost a year earlier.  Who knows what happens to these letters, they could sit in some inactive PO box forever before being forwarded.  Anyway, since Jack and Simon have the same vocabulary it sounds like he may get speech therapy too...can't hurt to start the ball rolling now!  Too bad we don't live near one another, our boys could do their homework together!  Party!!!

    Exactly! What random timing.

My guess is that it is a side effect of his chromsomal anomoly.  Huh?  Really that part goes way above my head.

  • Wow, for real? It took them that long? Argh!

  • Did you contact your Pedi about the speech delay (for the referral for the hearing test) and he then contacted the Geneticist? Perhaps that was the Geneticists "response". Weird, though.

Wouldn't that be fun!  We could have group speech therapy and play with each other's dogs.  Stick out tongue

Oh, and it was mailed last month, but went to my old address and was rerouted to my current address.  Still, no reason for it to be a year late!

  • I would be pissed.  What if the genetic defect caused a life threatening condition?  (It didn't, thank God.)  I would be VERY reluctant to see that man again and might be inclinded to send a letter to your state AMA complaining about the lack of follow up for two years.

  • Shame on them! Of course, I don't give a whole lot of credit to Dr. Doom anyway.

If that's the case, he didn't need to visit Jack to make this conclusion. Was Jack cooing and smiling at 2 months? Then how was he different from other babies? Or maybe they say this to everybody they visit "just in case'? I doubt it they even have enough data on Jack's aberration. Anyway, I would write them a letter and complain about this letter's being late on principal.

  • Well, I hope your pedi at least got a more timely copy  of the letter!  I'd ask and then complain to the geneticist's office - that is some mighty poor service!
