Boyfriend wants to get rid of my dog before the baby comes!

I'm originally from Minnesota and moved down here with my two small dogs a little over a year ago. He and I have been together almost eight months and are expecting our first child at the end of August. I have two dogs, Lucy and Casey, and he wants to get rid of Lucy. She is a four year old bichon-poo, maltese-shitzu. She is extremely sweet and loves to cuddle. He is a native Texan and is willing to move back to Minnesota with me when he is finished with school in two years. I'm beside myself as what to do. I know that ultimately I'll have to give her up if there is to be peace. I'm going to have to contact friends first to see if anyone will take her. Lucy is the white dog in the picture. Any thoughts? image

I'd get rid of the boyfriend...not the dogs.

You don't mention why he wants you to get rid of your dog. Is she aggressive? Seriously, you made a committment to your dogs when you got them, and your boyfriend needs to understand that. If he doesn't understand that, then you guys need to have a serious conversation. I feel sorry for you having to get rid of your pet just to "keep the peace" with your boyfriend.

I don't see a reason to get rid of the dog! Dogs & children can live together. Sounds like he just wants to stir things up. I can understand if the dog doesn't get along w/ kids, but just because is not a good reason.

Why is he only asking to get rid of one dog? That seems strange.

I have a maltipoo and a shih tzu and they are both great with our baby. To be honest, if a boyfriend asked me to get rid of my dogs, I would get rid of the boyfriend.

He just doesn't like her personality and the fact that she whines when she gets put in the bedroom for going on the couch.  She likes to jump on me when I get home from work due to excitement, but I'm working on stopping that.  Anyone have any ideas for stopping the jumping up?  We're not going to discuss it any longer because I get too stressed out.  If it does come down to having to find her a home, it won't be till after the baby is born.  It would be too traumatic for me otherwise.  I don't know what will happen.  I just really have to work on her training.

Oh, he is just asking to get rid of one dog, but not the other because he likes her.  The little one in the picture.  She is more independent.  I babied Lucy (the white dog) when she was a puppy, 'cause I hadn't had a puppy in thirteen years.  My other dog had passed away about six months after I got Lucy.

Try using a water bottle and spraying the dog when she jumps. You can also grab her paws and give a little tug, they don't like that and tend to stop after you keep repeating.

    I would try dog training.

My husband wants me to get rid of my cat, but that's not happening....Jack is part of our family too. We just have to adjust. So I am getting Jack's claws removed which is why my husband was concerned anyway.

I'm glad that you're able to put it off until after the baby. It's hard to predict and making decisions based on things that haven't happened yet seems well rash. FWIW our dogs are not perfect but pose no threat to DS. Truth be told he harasses them like crazy. I feel sorry for them and often have to separate him from the dogs because he is too rough with them.

Thanks for the tips and support. Its tough being so far from my friends and family. I'm working on stopping the jumping up behavior at the moment.

Our dog had a jumping up prob too, but we solved it by ignoring her when she did it. If she jumped on us, we would turn our backs to her without a word and completely ignore her until she stopped and calmed down. Now, she sits and patiently waits to be petted when we come home. Good Luck!

Well, another horrible weekend of arguing about keeping my dog.  He says I have a choice, but I don't feel like I do.  We're so miserable, I hate this.  He is sleeping on the couch again.  I'm still awake cause I don't want to sleep in the bed alone again.  I've put two ads up online so far.  I'm thinking of putting an ad in the local Fort Worth paper.  I won't take her to a pound.  Isn't pregnancy supposed to be a happy time?
