Dairy free diet help

Ok, so I'm going to be a PW here, I guess I've managed to realized my world isn't all P&R at the same time.  I'm pretty sure Brady has a milk protein sensitivity.  It looks like he has come up with quite a few of the symptoms and before I somehow find the money to get him checked out, I'd like to go off of dairy and find out if that will clear up his problems.  So for those that have done it, what do you eat?!  I think I have it even harder because I'm pretty sure I have an intolerance to eggs and soy and I know I have on to gluten.  I guess I'm going to eat a lot of nuts or make everything from scratch....anyone have any suggestions.  I'm going to miss my yogurt in the morning the most. :(

Re: Dairy free diet help

  • my sil is dairy and gluten free.  she eats a lot of the so delicious brand products (made from coconut milk) -- yogurt, milk, ice cream.  you can find it sold at sprouts, whole foods, and some heb's.

  • I eat soy products, but like PP said, Soy Delicious makes coconut milk ice cream and yogurt.  I know a lot of my friends who have a dairy and soy intolerance drink almond milk and like it a lot.  I can also eat goat and sheep cheese - it's just cow's milk that I have a problem with.  So maybe you could try subbing pecorino-romano (sheep) for parm or using goat cheddar instead of cow cheddar to see if that brings some relief?  I will say that the goat cheddar (sold at Whole Foods) is more expensive, but it is worth it if your LO isn't having reactions.  So sorry.  I know how hard it is to change your diet for your LO.

  • Those sound good!  I'll have to try them out.  I think I'm going to try almond milk for some added protein I will need though!

Yeah, I was thinking about trying goat products as well.  I'm going to try and go off of dairy all together first and the re-introduce it that way.  I'm sure when I wean him he will get goat products instead as well.

  • Almond Milk, fruit, veggies, turkey, chicken, avacodos and lots of Quinoa (its's GF too!). I think I have it at least once per day. Oreos are dairy free too Embarrassed

  • We use coconut milk for a variety of reasons but mostly because it helps with inflammation (which sounds like it might be helpful if you have other sensitivities).  We love the so delicious brand of milk, yogurt, and ice cream!  Yum!
  • I third the SO Delicious products. The Mint Chip ice cream is yum. I also use almond milk and it's been a decent substitute for baking. I won't eat it plain though. I generally just stay away from cheese b/c it's easier that way for me.  Also most gluten free products are also dairy free.  As is vegan food.  Just read labels really well.  A lot of stuff has dairy in it - cereals, crackers, cookies, breads, etc.  For butter, I like Earth Balance.

For eliminating from your milk - it takes 14 days to get out of your system and out of your milk completely.  Although - I could see a definite improvement in just 7 days.  Our gastro also said that 40% of kids w/ a dairy intolerance also have issues with soy - so good idea to stay away from that too if you're trying an elimination diet.
