February 2011 Moms

C-Section Scheduled due to baby's size

Today's ultrasound indicated that baby is 10lbs and doc said she didn't think it would be safe for mom or baby to deliver naturally.  They cancelled our induction for next Friday and now we are scheduled for a c-section this Friday morning.  The doc said she didn't think LO would fit through my pelvis and was worried about the shoulders.  Obviously I said I'll do whatever will be safest for us even if it scares me senseless.

I'm just curious if anyone else experienced this and how accurate the weight prediction was.  I still just can't believe there's 10 pounds of baby in there!  I was kinda expecting 6.5!

Re: C-Section Scheduled due to baby's size

  • A lot of people say that their U/S weight estimates were way off. However mine was dead on and they told me if I went to 40 weeks he would be about 7.5 pounds. At my growth U/S at 36 weeks they said he was about 5lbs 13oz then and I delivered 2 weeks later and he was 6 lbs 15 oz. (they gain about 1/2 pound a week in the last month) so if I had gone another 2 weeks he would have most likely been 7lbs 15oz or so. I had a c/s as well but not due to baby's size (pre-e). I wish you a speedy recovery!

  • Mine was off about a pound. They thought she would be over 9lbs, and she was 8lbs 4oz. I had a c/s, and it was scheduled before we knew anything about her size- it was based on my first experience resulting in an emergency c/s. I can say that this planned c/s was wayyyyy better than my first, which was not planned.

  • My ds has been measuring big and c/s was brought up as a possibility (I had trouble delivering my 6 1/2 lb dd...but still delivered vaginally). Honestly, I wouldn't jump to c/s without first trying induction. We have decided to induce next Monday (for other medical reasons) and if he ends up being to large and doesn't decend properly, then we will do a c/s. I don't want to have surgery unless I have to so I want to try induction first, especially since the measurements can be way off.

    Good luck to you !

  • I had to have an early C/S due to complete placenta previa but I was told that I would be having a 8 or 9 lb baby at 37 weeks... I was told consistently from weeks 28-33 that the ultrasounds showed a baby of the 83rd percentile  (90th percentile is considered macro).  They told me that her abdomen was measuring large from my GD.

They could not have been more wrong.  Baby was born at  37w2d at 5lbs 11 oz.  She is a little peanut.

    Ultrasounds can be very wrong.

  • I had a c/s with my first for this reason. There was also concern about her shoulder size and shoulder dystocia.  I was not a good candidate for an induction, but it was ultimately my choice.  I scheduled a c/s at 40 weeks, 1 day and prayed and tried to go into labor on my own.  It didn't happen, and I never dilated. I talked to every doctor in the practice for multiple opinions, and I felt very comfortable with my decision, and overall had a positive experience.  I think that it is important that you are comfortable with the decision. Good Luck!!

  • I have heard that the u/s measurements can be pretty off, although I never had a growth u/s with DS #! and since I'm still pregnant, not sure if the one I had 2 weeks ago is accurate or not.  However, if you aren't really comfortable with the c/s, I would ask for an induction 1st.  Really, without you trying to deliver vaginally, I don't know how they would tell you wouldn't be able to.  I had a c/s with DS #1 due to failure to progress, and even though my recovery wasn't horrible, I am desperately trying to VBAC this time.  There are increased risks if you want to have more children with each c/s you have, and it's major surgery!  Just some things to consider.  Good luck with your decision!
  • They told me my son would be around 9lb and a few ounces, he ended up being 7lb 12 oz. I was expecting this big kid and he;s a peanut! I had a c-section as well but due to blood pressure issues and swelling. It;s a harder recovery but definatly do-able. Good luck to you!

  • I'm curious too about people's experience with that.  My dr told me the same thing as you b/c of a 10 lb baby also.  He said inductions usually don't work in first time moms (especially ones showing no progress towards labor & combined with a big baby) & wind up in an emergency c-section.  I have my last appt on Thursday & am going to ask him if I tried an induction how long he would let it go before taking me in for a non-emergency c-section.  Maybe you could call your dr & ask that & post back!  I'll post when I hear from him but that might be too close for you.
  • It sounds like the shoulder size is the concern, not the weight of the baby.  I don't know how accurate the shoulder measurements are, but I know that the weight measurements I received were right on.  They estimated 8 lbs 8 oz a week before he was born - and he was 9 lbs 1 oz. I had no problems with delivery, but they were not concerned about shoulder size.

I would have a frank conversation with your doctor and ask for a full explanation of their concerns and why they want to go with a c-section. You should be comfortable with the decision, and having this conversation may address your concerns.
