Nicknames for Kathleen

Would Lena be an odd, left field nickname for Kathleen? I'm just contemplating options. I'm a Jessica without a nickname so I know one might not be used. Thank you!

Re: Nicknames for Kathleen

  • I don't think it's odd. I knew a Catlina growing up that went by Lena. I think most people would tend to shorten it to Kathy, Kath or Kat, but like you said, not everyone gets/gives nicknames.

I think Kathleen is a lovely name, btw. It is very common in my family, at least one every generation. :)

  • Obviously, Kath and Kathy.  I have also seen Kate and Kat.  I think Lena does come out of left field.

  • I don't see why that couldn't work.  I know a Kathleen who goes by Katie

  • I think Lena is a logical NN for Kathleen.

I graduated high school with a Kathleen who went by Katie. It's more probable she'd be called Katie or Kathy, but if she wanted to go by Lena, or if she went by Lena from a young age, it would certainly catch on without any trouble.

  • I know two Kathleens.  One goes by Kathy, the other goes by either Kate or Katy.
  • Before I clicked, I was going to suggest Lena as a nickname for Kathleen. :)

  • I am a Kathleen. The nn I have been called are Kathy and Kath (by family). I always wanted to go by Kate. FWIW I have never liked my name. It always felt grandma-ish.

  • It's not too weird, but probably not what people would think to nn her right off the bat.  FWIW I love Kathleen by itself and don't think it really needs any nns.

  • I dont think it is a bad nn for Kathleen. I know a Kathleen that went by Leena

  • Like you said in your OP, a nickname might never be used. My best friend my growing up was named Kathleen. She's now 36 and she's still Kathleen. I think her husband sometimes calls her Kat, but that's it.

  • I am a Kathleen. My nicknames have been Kathy and Kat. Honestly it has always annoyed me that my parents and other people felt the need to not call me Kathleen. I think it is a great name and don't know why people insist on shortening it. Ok just my gripe of living with the name for 34 years.
