Babies on the Brain

Another Tuesday Question

How long do you wait out a sickness before worrying about dehydration effecting the baby? 24 hours?

I've been throwing up every half hour since 3am. I'm down to thick yellow bile. I can't even keep water down. I've had diahrea and a lot of pain in the stomach and cramp/contraction like feelings but only randomly. I can still feel him moving every little while.

I'm so weak I can barely get myself off the sofa and I'm extremely shaky. Been running a mild fever of 99.5.

Do I wait it out till the morning or call the dr. or what? It's probably that bug or the flu that is going around so it may not last long, I'm just worried because I can't even keep water down and am so weak.

Re: Another Tuesday Question

  • I wouldn't wait, I'd call.

  • I asked a similar question last week - most folks said that the rule of thumb is after 24 hours go in to be re-hydrated. That said, I would probably go ahead and call.
  • Call. Vomiting and diarrhea? I wouldn't try to wait it out any longer. Hope you feel better!

  • Please call.  Better safe than sorry.

  • I would call, because then you'll probably start feeling better. At least that's how things work for me.

  • I called the doc after 8 hours of being able to keep nothing down.  She told me I could come into L&D for an IV if I wished, but recommended that we try Zofran first and see if it helped.  I chose the Zofran b/c I really didn't want to drive myself to L&D unless necessary (this was late in the evening and Gabe was already asleep).  She called in a script for me and told me if I still couldn't keep anything down by morning (which would have been 18-20 hours of keeping nothing down) to come in.

The Zofran did the trick for me and I didn't need to go to L&D.

Also, this is not a Tuesday question, this is a perfectly respectable worry/question.  Just so you don't feel bad Wink

  • I called. They just said it sounds like the 24 hour bug they have been seeing. To try a tbs of gatoraide and see if that stays down and call them back in the morning if I still can't keep anything down.

we have NOTHING but water in this house and DH is not answering my texts. ::pouts::

  • Call or just go straight to the ER and call OB on the way. You need IV fluids.

A tbs? That seems so insignificant, but what do I know. I would start with water and then just wait for DH to bring you gatorade. I'm guessing you don't have any pedialyte either, right?

  • This is what we do for kids to orally rehydrate them. We give parents a 5cc syringe and a bottle of flavored pedialyte - powerade for older kids - and tell them 1 syringe every 5 - 10 minutes. After the first bottle it's 1 syringe every 3-5 minutes. 3rd bottle is 2 syringes every 5 - 10...

It works. It's repetitive and frustrating, but it works. Slow and steady wins the race and all...

Go ahead with water, ask DH to bring home gatorade when he can. You can use any kind of liquid, gatorade has sugar and salt in it which is good.

However, if that doesn't work, IV.

  • Until DH gets home with gatorade, mix a glass of apple juice  50/50 with water (or more water if you just can't handle it) and add a pinch of salt.

  • Homemade Pedialyte

    2 qts Water

    1 tsp baking soda

    1 tsp salt

    1 packet Kool Aid

    7 Tbs sugar

(It tastes nasty, but it helps.)

I hope you feel better asap, and without having to get an IV.

  • The rule that my doctor told me was 24 hours of not keeping anything down, or when ever I start to feel like crap, really wilted, extra tired, weak, feverish.

  • I went in for IV fluids after 12 hours of vomiting and diarrhea.  Mostly because I was having contractions and it really freaked me out (this was at 31 weeks).  They gave me Zofran through the IV port and 3 bags of IV fluids.  I actually started feeling human after the second bag.
