stupid IRS.. how can someone else claim MY child?

When FI went to file his taxes 3 weeks ago they told us how much would be deposited into our checking account.  He claimed Kylie since he works and it just made more sense.

Fast forward to Saturday when I look at our bank account.  The IRS deposit is $1,000 less than what they told us we were getting!  My parents said to wait until today that maybe the bank just held the money.

So today FI took his mom to do her taxes and the guy at H&R Block said that someone else claimed our baby?

I do not understand one bit! Everytime we call the IRS they say to call back later because they are real busy.

I am beyond mad. I haven't done my taxes yet, my parents didn't do theirs either. So now I am terrified that someone else has DD's SSN.

  • Is there someone else who could claim LO as a dependent? Do you live on your own or with others?

  • Did they tell you who it was? Is there anyone else who could claim her?

Edit to change a 'him' to a 'her'

  • It's very possible that someone else wrote their childs SSN down incorrectly, and it just happened to be your LOs SSN. But yeah, I would panic too!

  • maybe another taxpayer mistakenly put your DD's ssn...if it was close to their childs, hopefully that is all it is and they can get it corrected soon.

  • I couldn't get past the point where you typed H&R Block.

I am sorry for your troubles. I'm not sure if you can immediately assume this is an issue with the IRS.

Oh, and NEVER again go to H&R Block. They are a RIP OFF, and are horrible!

  • If you file eletronically, the system crosschecks the name with the social security number.  The first year we had DS #1, my return got kicked back because I had transposed 2 numbers in his SS# and it didn't match up.  To claim your child someone would have to correctly list both pieces of info.  Obviously, there is no immediate cross check if someone paper files.

It's very likely an IRS glitch that can be easily resolved.  I wouldn't panic.

    This.

I've never been to H&R Block, but have never heard good things about them. Most recently, Irish said that H&R Block hires high school graduates (not accountants/CPAs) and they basically plug everything into Turbo Tax anyway.

I'm sorry for your troubles. I hope it's straightend out soon.

As a CPA I will say H&R block doesn't fully deserve the bad rep it's gets (especially around here).  Yes, during the super busy tax time they hire college students or other part time employees do their tax work.   If you are a basic filer (standard 1040, itemized deductions), your taxes will most likely be assigned to those type of people.  They are, however, trained very well and they aren't just any idiot off the street.  They do hire quality people, for the most part.  At every branch there are CPAs that the part time employees can consult with.  Yes, they have a plug and chug program similar to Turbo Tax but any decent sized accounting firm has developed those type of programs.

Yes, H&R Block is more expensive that Turbo Tax but besides the CPA turned SAHM who does tax work on the side or a very small town, local CPA business, you are going to pay WAY more for a CPA to sit down and do your taxes.

Personally, Turbo Tax makes it 75% idiot proof, so attempting your own taxes would be my recommendation.  However, there is a large market of people who just don't feel comfortable doing that AND can't afford a CPA.  H&R Block is not a bad option in that case.
