Babies: 9 - 12 Months

s/o mirena..i have questions

so i think i am going to get mirena next month. i have never had anything but probs on birth control...excessive bleeding, cramps, mood swings, blah blah.

how long does the breakthrough bleeding on mirena last? is it like a full on period or just spotting?  is there a lot of cramping besides the placement of it? and anyone notice any moodiness?

thank you very much :)

Re: s/o mirena..i have questions

  • I got Mirena when I was 8 weeks PP. I had a little bit of spotting and then a week later started bleeding for 2 weeks. The OB didn't know if it was my first PPP or if it was from Mirena. I didn't get AF again for 9 months ( I EBF and bedshare) so I think the bleeding was from Mirena. All good now though and AF usually only lasts a day or two.

  • I think it varies greatly.

My personal experience.  I got Mirena when my DD was over a year old. . . can't exactly remember.  I had terrible problems with the pill so didn't want it again.

I had spotting for about 6-8 weeks and then had a two week long "period" every month for 6 months after that.  It was light, but consistent.

I was about ready to give up and then it leveled out and I had a very light (3-4 day) period every month after that.

I don't mean to hijack the post, but did Mirena affect your supply at all? That is my major concern for getting it, I EBF all of my other babies, and I wasn't sure if getting it 8 weeks PP would affect my supply..

This is me.  I'm hoping is quits for me soon too.  I'm sticking with it though because I suck at taking the pill every day and I do NOT want another baby anytime soon.

See I do not want to give birth while H is deployed so we are waiting and I have been wanting to do the mirena and that scares me to have to bleed that much! Did the doctor tell you if that's the norm for it?

  • About a week after having the mirena placed, I started bleeding like a heavy period. it lasted about 4 weeks. I also had some slight cramping for a couple of days after placement but since i have not had any problems.

You know, I think it did. I started having supply issues around 3 months PP, but I kicked its azz. I drank tons of water and pumped in between feedings and it was ok by 5 months PP. I still have to be very careful. Im having issues right now cause I have been really sick with a fever and got dehydrated. Im slowly getting better though. I never thought it might have been from Mirena cause I got it so early PP, but it probably was the problem.

  • My experience has been very good.  I haven't had any side effects, other than the initial spotting.  I had it placed at 10 weeks pp and I spotted for 4-5 weeks--not heavy, just enough to require a liner.  The nurse practitioner said anything up to 6 months is normal but usually it lasts 2-8 weeks.  It didn't effect my supply at all and I have still not had a period at 8 months pp (I am still BFing though).  Mine was painless to have inserted as well.  I had mild cramps for a couple of hours afterward but nothing terrible--similar to period cramps but not as strong.  I highly recommend it--I have been on the pill and Nuvaring in the past and I like Mirena much better.
