carseat placement in Dodge Caravan...

I think we are going to have to switch the twins to convertible carseats in the next month.  Right now, we have both twins in the back and DS#1 in the middle seat.  We have a stow n' go, so the second middle seat is always stowed.  Now, I am trying to figure out the best way to position the kids once we have three convertible carseats.  With the twins facing backwards, I am unsure what will be the easiest way to place them.  All I can come up with now is keeping the twins in the back and belting them in from the trunk - which seems like a pain.  Any ideas?  Are there any thin convertible carseats that we can put in the back seat, but will still leave room in the middle for us to sit and belt the twins in?

Also, DH drives an older Dodge Caravan with a bench with two seatbelts in the middle.  I think with his car, we are going to just put the twins in the middle seat and DS#1 in the back.  I hate to do that because I won't be able to hand him things, but I think this is the best way.

Any help with the stow n' go would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: carseat placement in Dodge Caravan...

  • we have DS1 in the back row and the twins in the middle- it's always been this way and works well. I can't imagine putting 2 children into the back- total PITA.  DS1 can climb back there himself and get into the seat- i just lean over and buckle him..... and the twins are easy to do b/c they are in the middle right near the doors.

the twins are rear facing and DS1 is FF - so they all see each other and it's like a  big party back there- they love it.

I don't hand things to my children in the car- they don't eat in the car (i worry about choking) and if they drop a toy, too bad- they wait until we get to our destination to get it back. They know that.

when they are all FF (when they are 2) I will put all 3 in the back row with sunshine radian seats - and stow and go one of the middle seats to give more room getting in/out.

beware- it might be hard to fit your convertible seats rear facing behind the driver's seat - check to see how much room you have with the bench.... i had a caravan with a bench and our britax were too big and stuck out too far RF to be behind my driver's seat.  I got a new caravan with the captains chairs and they seem to have more room- so the britax does fit behind my seat.... but before we had the Combi Coccoro behind my seat with the bench- that worked well.  Now we use that one on the side that DS1 gets in, so he has more room to get in behind the passenger seat.... and the Britax is behind me - but gives no room to get in behind it.

  • We have a T&C, so same setup.  We have the twins rear-facing in the 2nd row because it's really the only easy way to buckle them in rear-facing!  We can still reach back to the 3rd row to buckle/un-buckle our boys.
