Preemies

When did your preemie eat baby foods?

Our girls are 6 months old.... (4 months adjusted) but they do not seem at all interested in trying the puree foods or oatmeal...etc.    When did you have success with spoon feedings?

Thank you for any advice! :)

Re: When did your preemie eat baby foods?

  • We tried to feed him baby food and cereal at 6 mos old actual (4 months adjusted), but he would just wear it.  The women on this forum were really supportive and just told me that I had to keep trying.

And then on Christmas day, he finally opened up his mouth and ate the pear baby food.  He was 7 mos actual (5 months adjusted). I really like the Earth's Best 1st baby food.  I used this from Christmas Day to the end of January.  And from that point, we have been using Earth's Best 2nd baby food.  But sometimes, I still get the prune Earth's Best 1st baby food, because I think that helps him--get the poop out.  The Gerber 2nd baby food is okay--I just send that to daycare.  And I also use the Earth's Best Rice Cereal and Gerber's Oatmeal.

The Bumkins Waterproof Superbibs-Spacebear and Dr.Seuss in the Hat- have worked really well for us (fits his neck and keeps him less messy), but we still have to have an extra towel to wipe him off.

See pictures below.  I got the bowls from Pottery Barn Kids.

  • Thank you!!  I've always wondered if anyone liked/used the Earths best.  Love the pics!!

and my girls are def. "wearing" it.  maybe I will back off to 1x a day.... instead of trying it twice a day.  I don't want them to not like it...

  • Just keep at it- and remember that those first foods are pretty bland and don't exactly make for "exciting" foods. Right now even a small amount of solids is a lot for their little tummy's so if they're getting in even a little it's a meal to them.

At 6 months actual we started solids, but DD wasn't interested for about a month in the whole process- we could get it in but there was no excitement and certainly no attempt to actively participate. And then one day she started getting into it, and as new foods kept coming she became more and more excited about eating.

When are you feeding them? Are they expecting a bottle at that time? Try making it a separate event, like a little snack. That way they aren't frustrate and starving and not so full that the solids aren't appealing.

  • We were told to start at 6 mos actual, 3 adjusted.  The reason being they said he would need more practice.

He did OK for a while, but then around 6-8 months refused for a long time.  I kind of think we would have been better off waiting a little longer.

  • We didn't start until they were 5 1/2 adjusted. We didn't start with rice or oatmeal only veggies. N took to it pretty well and is a good eater. L not so much and still won't eat any food. (but this is due to other problems we are having)

  • We just started a couple weeks ago. Our pedi gave us the go ahead at 4 months actual but I didn't think he was quite ready so we waited until he was 5 1/5 actual, about 2 1/2 adjusted. He loves it! I was really suprised how well he did with the spoon from very beginning. I wouldn't push it if they don't seem interested. That can do more harm than good. Maybe just try again in a couple weeks. They will get there!

  • We started DD around 5 1/2 month actually, she seemed ready. Although she only took a few tablespoons of oatmeal for the first two weeks and then we gradually worked in other fruits and veggies.

  • We started at 8 months. DS was ready before and showing signs, but he has some tummy issues so per the G.I. doctor we waited.
  • Thanks everyone!!
