We'll as for newborn diapers, one should only need about half of the giant boxes at costco. My friend had a baby and she gave me the 2nd half of the box, so now I don't need any NB diapers. As for the others, IDK. It all depends on how fast they grow, I have another friend whose baby has been wearing size 5 since 5 months old!
I know its tempting, but dont. You do not know what your baby likes or (hopefully not) is allergic to. Get one pack or two for newborns, clip coupons and save them or something, but dont get diapers now.

We got two boxes of NB diapers at Madison's baby shower plus I have picked up the free ones at every MD appointment. We have not opened the boxes because you can always take them back and exchange them (so if you do want to stock up keep this in mind).
My H has a Diaper Party at Hooters next Saturday (he doesn't know about it and I hope we are not at the hospital at that time). His friend who set it up asked and I told him to put on the invite size 1-3 any kind of diaper. Again, I won't open them and will just take them back if she outgrows them.
In regards to which brand, if I find we don't like a brand (if the box is already open) I plan to contact the church that we were married in (old hs friends H is the minister) and see if there are any families in his church that could use FREE diapers dt financial need There is also a local church that has a food and clothing pantry that I know diapers are never donated to bc I used to donate my time there. No reason to let them sit or give them to people who have the money to purchase them on there own. One day my family might be the one in need of help and I hope others would be so kind.

Your friend's child weighs 27+ pounds at 5 months? Seriously?
Be careful! DD was a preemie and went through TONS of NB, half a pack of ones, boxes of twos and threes and has been in fours forever- this is the complete opposite of my nephew who NEVER wore NB, wore ones for ages, barely wore twos, went through tons of threes, skipped up to fives and then shrunk back to fours when he started walking but only barely because then he was PT-ing.
Every baby is soooo different in their growth that you never know- also, just because the size on the box says a certain weight, baby's body type can also affect what size they're in. I'd avoid stocking up and get gift cards and collect coupons.
We got lots of 1s and 2s as gifts at my "sprinkle". In terms of NB, I have about 10 left over from a friend, and then we have one small package. That's all I am getting for now. DS was in them for 5 weeks, so we did end up buying abig thing from BJ's for him, but I am waiting to see DD's size. Some babies never fit in them.

Honestly, I wouldn't stock up. Especially on the small sizes. When it comes to 3's, and 4's, that is another story, but for the little sizes, just wait it out. There will be deals after the baby gets here too.
