Need some Pumper expertise

Have decided to switch from EBF to mostly pumping. DD is really not happy at the breast anymore and is definitely preferring her nightly bottle. I'm ready to switch over to do more bottles but still want to try and use as much breastmilk as i can pump. My supply is low and i've been having to supplement formula (half and half) to satisfy her. i start back to work in a few weeks, so i know i'll be able to pump there, but what is your daily routine like? how often are you pumping and do you ever BF? I'd like to see if she'd still nurse am and pm for comfort (maybe more for me than her). do you pump at night or only during the day? i appreciate your personal experiences.  TIA!!

Re: Need some Pumper expertise

  • My LO sleeps through the night.  In the morning, before work, I nurse her on one side while pumping the other side.  Pump twice at work.  She gets mostly pumped milk at the sitters, but usually she needs a few more ounces of formula.  I nurse her in the evening.  Sometimes my supply seems too low and she'll get a few ounces in the evening of formula, sometimes not.  If I go to sleep shortly after her, I don't pump again (but I'm very engorged by the next morning, I could definitely do a middle of the night pumping, just prefer to get sleep instead).  If I stay up a couple more hours after LO went to bed I will pump before I go to bed.

I'm sure I could work harder at pumping more, but since we started supplementing some anyway, this works for us.

9:00am pump at work for 10 minutes get about 4 1/2-5oz

12:30pm  pump at work for 10 minutes get about 4 1/2-5oz

4:00pm pump at work for 10 minutes get about 4 1/2-5oz

    5:30ish bf LO

    7:30ish bf LO

10:00pm LO gets 4 1/2 oz bottle of Breast milk

10:15pm pump get about 5 oz.

I am able to sleep through the night with out pumping and LO sleeps straight through as well. He is getting enough and I havent had to supplement.  I also have a freezer full.

Weekends are a different story and I know I dont pump enough!

  • I EBF went I am with DS.  When I am not with DS I pump at the times I would normally be nursing.  I usually call DH to see how much he drank to make sure I have pumped that amount.  I then replenish my freezer stash with my pumped milk.

I established a 3-day freezer stash in my first few weeks of BFing.  I would pump every morning after DS's first feed or during the feed on the opposite breast.
