Our plan is to just cut them shorter. Is that a good one? I was looking at those winder contraptions through which you feed the cord, but they have some pretty bad reviews. If I were to tie it shorter, it would create a dangerous loop.
The little hook things you wind them around don't seem like a good solution either since it would take a loooong time to wind and unwind our long cords.
If you can link me to the best outlet covers, that would be helpful too. There are too many options with those.
Re: What did you do about blinds cords?
dh cut most of the blind cords shorter. that was after i ordered all the little plastic thingys you can put on them. the cords are ridiculously long even if we didn't have kids! so when the blinds are down, the cord is really short, but it works for us!
when the blinds are up, i loop the cord thru one of the blinds near the top. not a perfect solution, but our blinds are rarely all the way up.
we just bought the cheapest outlet covers at bru or target. they work just fine. now the cabinet lock thingys require more research depending on what kind of cabinets you have. we got real basic ones and they are just fine (at least right now!)https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Baby-Safety-Latches-Pack/dp/B003NSAY7U/ref=pd_sbs_ba_1
I would loop them, creating multiple knots for smaller loops. That way when you pull them all the way to open the blinds, you can just add more loops.
They cord should be about 1/2 way down the blinds when they are fully down. To cut them shorter would be awkward looking, esp if you ever sell the house.
Also, you can do some simple research on the best types of knots for blinds that would come out easily. DH can tie a bajillion types of useful knots, and I would imagine one is better than another for your situation.
This is what we do.
The Blog
We tie our ends up in a knot way up high. High enough that I have to reach over my head to get to it. That way we have the cord when we need it, but it's out of the way when we don't.
As for outlet covers, I never found any I liked. The ones the kids couldn't pull out were too hard for me to pull out too; the ones I could manage were no barrier at all for the kids. So instead of outlet covers, we installed new tamper-resistant receptacles throughout the house. It was really easy, it wasn't that expensive, and they're safer than outlet covers. You can buy them at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Thanks, guys. I was just draping it over a blind when ours were up, and it worked fine. Then, my DH saw I was doing that, and he does a weird, annoying version of it that's hard to get out! Our cords are super long too.
For the outlets, I think I'm going to get the plates where the covers slide over.
JMO, but I would think you wouldn't want to cut the cords when/if you do sell the house.
I think this a solution was posted on the D&R board today.
They suggested two of those hooks that have sticky backs (like the 3M kind). That you can put one hook facing down, and one facing up and wrapping the chord around the two (like a vacuum cleaner chord) on the side of the window.
Would that work for what you need?
