Baby Names

Name for a boy - your opinion?

Good morning, ladies - I could use your opinions.....

My OB was wrong - it's not a girl (that's what she told me at 16w).  I was shocked to find out (at the anatomy scan) that she is actually a he!  So I need some help with names.  What do you think of:

Matthew (I love "Matty" for a boy (but not an adult) and Matthew, but not crazy about Matt)

Andrew (Drew, but my husband doesn't love)

Nathan (Nate)

Cameron (Cam - my husband's choice).  I don't know how I feel about the full name, but I like the sound of the nickname - especially with our last name.

Also, I am looking for middle name options.  I'm liking "James" for the sound/flow of the name with our last name, but not many other 1 syllable names sound right.  Any suggestions?

Re: Name for a boy - your opinion?

  • I think that they're all good choices.

I like Cameron, but since it's become a little unisex, I've been considering Campbell instead.  That way you can still use Cam as a nickname.

  • Of those, I prefer Nathan and Andrew. Nathan James or Nathaniel James sounds good to me. I actually know a Nathaniel James who is uber smart and finished his undergrad (and therefore med school as well) 2 years early. And he's nice. Great name.

Andrew John is a good combination as well.

  • I think all your name options go well with James as a MN.

  • I really like Matthew but it is likely that at some point it will be shortened to Matt.  I don't care for Matty because it sounds too much like "Maddy," which is very popular right now for girls.

I also really like Andrew, especially with the nickname Andy.  I'm not a big fan of Drew.  However, if your husband doesn't care for it, it probably isn't the right choice.

Nathan is a nice name.  Nate sounds strong.

I don't care for Cameron because it is being used on girls now, and I would be afraid of teasing.  Cam is a cute nickname.

Middle name suggestions - Benjamin, Alexander, Grant, Cole, Joel, Cade, Mark, Clark, Scott, Dean, Seth, John, Jude, Gabriel, Joshua, Christopher, Ian, Philip, Sebastian, Arthur, Vincent, Nicholas, George, Jonathan, William

  • I like Nathan and Andrew, they both go good with james. I am not a fan of mathew, personal reasons. Cameron is very popular as a girls name right now.

  • I like Matthew but agree that people will call him Matt. I also like Cameron and Nathan. All sound good with James. Do you have any mn with family connections? For me, unless it is a name you love, I think it is nice to use a mn with meaning rather than just a random name.

  • If you like Matthew, but not Matt, what about Mateo or Matthias? You could still use Matty, but they wouldn't get shortened to Matt. They're a bit more unusual than your names, though.

I like all of your choices.

  • Nathan (Nate) is my fav.  Can't help with mn, I am a big fan of using a family name for a middle name so my advice would be to pick someone special and go with that as a mn, even if it doesn't sound "perfect".

  • I have a Matthew. We call him Matthew and correct people if they call him Matty or Matt. Pretty easy.

I agree that Cameron is becoming a unisex name but also think that Campbell is even more so.  I don't know a single male Campbell born in the last five years.

  • Matthew is my favorite by far.

    Andrew would be next

Not a huge fan of Nathan (im a NYr and all i can think about is nathans franks and coney island!)

I do not like Cameron at all,

I think James would go great with any of them.

  • I love Matthew, Andrew and Nathan! I don't care for Cameron as it's used on boys AND girls. However, I'd suggest Camden or another variation of surname if you want to use the nickname Cam.

  • Just b/c I'm feeling defensive over our own name choice, while it may seem that Cameron has become more of a girl name, last year it was only #356 on the ss index for girls, and the Camryn spelling wasn't even in the top 100. I don't see it jumping to the top spot anytime soon, considering that the closest it has ever gotten to 100 in the girls' side was 1999 at 176. Ranting, yes, but it's getting old hearing everyone here talk about how it's a good name, but is now a girl's name, when #'s say differently.

LOL!  I sort of felt the same way when I looked at the popularity of it on the SSA website.  My boss has a little girl who's twelve or so and her name is Camryn, and then of course there's Cameron Diaz, but other than that, I don't know of any...

So we'll see.  I have a brother with a unisex name and he hated it his entire life.  It's an ugly name too (hate to say that, but it is) and I think that's more the problem for him.  Anyway, thanks for your comments!

  • from your list, i like cameron the best.
  • I like the all with Cameron being my last choice.  Love Drew as a nn for Andrew.
