Burping Baby

I have trouble getting my 3 week old to burp...I put her on my shoulder, sit her up and pat her back, and lay her on her tummy on my lap--it is rare that she burps and at night she is very fussy/gassy and I have a feeling it is because she does not burp during the day.

I breastfeed and I know Ive hear breastfed babies dont burp as often as formula fed but shouldnt she be burping after each meal? Any tips on how to get her to burp---and does anyone else have this problem? I want to help her gas pains, especially at night and yes I do give her gas drops--sometimes helps.

    According to baby 411, if they don't burp after a few tries, then they prolly won't. LO falls asleep while nursing, so burping is sometimes hopeless. I try to keep her upright while nursing and sometimes I take her off and burp her, then let her go until she falls asleep. At least I know I got one burp in. If she's awake when she's done nursing and I'm trying to burp her, I usually change her positions, like from sitting to standing, you know, kind of move her around. Personally, it's hard for me to burp if I'm laying and it gets easier as I move around, so I use the same logic for her lol. It works, can't say if it's because of my logic though. GL.

    Try laying her back and sitting her up a 1/2 doz times or so when you burp her sitting up. I find that helps move things along. Or rubbing her back firmly between pats.

    Thanks for posting this..I haven't really heard my daughter burp after BFing. DH feeds her with a bottle sometimes and she definitely burps then, so I know that she can. I hope to find some advise too. Have you tried a LC? I thought about calling mine.

    I used to have a hard time getting my LO to burp as well.  I've noticed it really helps if I make sure her little legs are tucked up under her tummy when I put her on my shoulder.  She burps about 90% of the time now.

    My husband can easily get DS to burp over his shoulder but I can try any approach and rarely get him to burp. Must be a "male bonding" thing! Wink When DS is definitely ready to get up for the day [6am-ish] I hear him doing a lot of grunting and farting and I feel like I didn't try burping him enough after nursing during the night. I figure that as long as he isn't crying over the gas pain he's ok.

    Another approach that could work for you that DH does is to lay LO on their back and push their feet to their chest. Doing this a few times may let out a little fart or two. HTH

    I usually can only get my DD to burp if I sit her up on my lap supporting her chin (like a lil puppet)  My husband almost always can get her to burp over his shoulder.  I use the tilt up and back method as well when I am trying to switch her to the other side.. GL
