Have you stuck to the "Do Not Eat" list?

Be honest have you really not eaten anything pregnant women are "not allowed" to eat?

  • soft, unpasteurized cheeses such as feta, goat, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined cheeses, and Mexican queso fresco
  • unpasteurized milk, juices, and apple cider
  • raw eggs or foods containing raw eggs, including mousse, tiramisu, raw cookie dough, eggnog, homemade ice cream, and Caesar dressing
  • raw or undercooked fish (sushi), shellfish, or meats
  • p?t? and meat spreads
  • processed meats such as hot dogs and deli meats
  • shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and tuna steak

Does anyone know what is supposed to be the repercussions to eating these things? What would it do to the baby?

I'm going to be honest I have had some sushi. I had the cooked ones, but you know they used the same knife for my Cali Roll that they used for husbands Rainbow Roll. And I also ate a half pint of Cherry Garcia ice cream and when I was finished I read on the ingredients: egg yolks, oops.

  • I don't eat that stuff usually, but if it crossed my path, I'd eat it - like cookie dough, I had some last week? and it was amazing!

  • I've eaten a fair amount of sushi but try to stay away from the raw ones... I have had a 'taste' or two of two different rolls at two different times of ones that had raw tuna in them... I miss my tuna rolls.  :(  Other than that I've been pretty good... I did lick the spoon once when I was making muffins so I guess I got a little raw egg there.  ;P

  • I'm such a paranoid person to begin with so I can honestly say I've cut out everything you're not suppose to eat or drink the second I found out I was pregnant. I went cold turkey on a lot of things I love. But I just CAN'T do it. It would be my luck that the one time I slipped a little something bad would happen.

  • I also had a sub sandwich or two since I have been pregnant, and that has deli meat in it. Oh and hotdogs and corndogs...mmmm

  • Heck no... to me everything in moderation is fine.  I do not eat some things on that list anyways, but the hot dogs, lunch meat, fish, and cookie dough I've all eaten.

  • I think these are just items that can carry more bacteria and have the potential of making you sick. The fish are high in mercury.

As for you list, I don't eat:

    • unpasteurized milk, juices, and apple cider
    • raw eggs or foods containing raw eggs, including mousse, tiramisu, raw cookie dough, eggnog, homemade ice cream, and Caesar dressing
    • raw or undercooked fish (sushi), shellfish, or meats
    • p?t? and meat spreads
    • shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and tuna steak

But to be honest, if I LOVED king mackerel for example, I would probably have some.

  • I've had feta cheese (but pasteurized) and had some salami on a sandwich the other day. I'm dying for some sushi but I'm worried about the seaweed wrap....I've had hotdogs but the none nitrate kind.

  • I licked the spoon after making brownies last weekend.  It was delicious.

  • I've eaten a lot of soft cheeses, but I do believe all of them have been pasteurized.   I do eat deli meats and hot dogs on occasion too.  I don't really care for any of the other stuff anyway.

  • I eat deli meat(turkey) a lot.  I heat it up..but I still probably eat more than I should.

  • I eat soft cheeses all the time, and just try to make sure they are pasteurized.

Also, I had caesar salad many times before I realized the whole raw egg in the dressing thing.

Honestly, there are so many things on the "do not eat" list...I think it's fine to use your best judgment with what you can/cannot eat.

  • I ate some brownie batter and Ive had ice cream ( I didnt check the labels so who knows whether it had egg yolks).

I havent had any sushi but I have had lunch meat a couple times. I think moderation is fine

  • I've tried to avoid those foods,  but I have had them occasionally.    I've had some soft cheeses but I made sure they were pasteurized and from a reputable place.   I haven't had any raw sushi, I'd probably have some if I was at a decent sushi restaurant but in small quantities.

I think having those foods are ok in small amounts as long as they come from places you know and trust and who practice good food safety.

  • My doctor never gave me a list, and didn't seem concerned with much.

I've eaten: soft cheese, blue cheese, cookie dough, sushi, processed meat, medium steak.

I've stayed away from: high mercury fish. And cut my caffiene intake to <300 mg/day.

  • I am in the "everything in moderation" camp too. I eat sushi about once a week, I try and get mostly the cooked stuff but I love nigiri so I usually get a couple pieces of salmon as well. I eat soft cheeses, though all have been pasteurized (I think?). I don't like real Caesar dressing so that's not a problem. I drink an occasional glass of wine and eat hot dogs too. So I guess my answer would be no, I don't stick to the "Do Not Eat" list :)

     Yes ditto

  • For the most part I have. I have had cooked sushi and I have had hot dogs a couple of times because I read they are fine as long as they are cooked to steaming. Before I knew about it I had a turkey sub but not since then and I have had poached eggs but now I use the pasturized ones if I have poached eggs. I mostly stick to decaf coffee occasionally when I want coffee. I may have had regular maybe 2 or 3 times and I have eaten my fair share of chocolate but I still stay under the maximum allowence for caffeine. All the other things I have stayed away from.

  • Oh I've eaten plenty of medium (closer to mid-rare) steaks!

  • I am definitely in the *everything in moderation* category. I have enjoyed sashimi, deli sandwiches, etc. while pregnant. My doctor never gave me a list or told me to cut anything out other than scaling my coffee intake down to one or two cups a day.

    DD1: May 2011
    DD2: February 2014

  • No, and I am going for sushi tonight. :D
  • I'm in the everything in moderation camp (or do my best to do everything in moderation camp). My MIL craved hot dogs when she was pregnant with my husband, and he's just fine. My mother had a smoking roommate at the hospital when I was born! Lord knows what our grandmothers were eating and exposed to.

I have a low risk pregnancy (so far), and eat pretty well otherwise, so yes, I lick the brownie batter spoon, eat the raw cookie dough, indulge in the occasional deli meats, and try not to torture myself with the eating rules. Pregnancy is torture enough already!

I'm also comforted by the fact some people have lists, some don't, some docs have rules, some don't. If the stuff was THAT BAD I think everyone would be using the same standards. That's my rationalization at least:-)

  • I eat cold lunchmeat. At christmas I had eggnog. I love bagels and cream cheese. I still drink caffeine but I have cut back on that quite a bit. Like once or twice a month at most.

I do buy the pasteurized cream cheese and the safe eggnog but only because its so rare that you find unpasteurized or unsafe products in the big box stores.

  • Wow, not even a little! I've had sushi, cookie dough, soft cheeses, small glasses of wine once a month or so since 12 weeks..

I was surprised by doc didn't care but he just said not to overdo it

  • From your list, I've had every kind of soft cheese available to man.  Mostly because, if it's in the US, most likely it WILL be pasteurized (tiny little secret).  Apple cider.Mousse/tiramisu because this does not contain raw eggs (that's a fallacy).  The eggs are cooked when you add the chocolate/egg mixture!Plenty of raw or undercooked fish (sushi), just not every day (nor every week)P?t? (yum!)Tuna steakI've also had wine, beer and a bit of brandy.
Just in moderation.  I've definitely not deprived myself.

  • For the most part I have stuck to it.  I have had sandwich meat a couple times but got my sub toasted figuring at least it was somewhat heated.  I live on feta cheese but it is pasteurized.  I had apple cider too but it was pasteurized as well.
  • I've pretty much stuck to the Do Not Eat list, for stuff I realized I was supposed to avoid.  There have been a couple of occasions where, for instance, after the fact, I discovered that, oh, that smoothie or milkshake is made with soft-serve ice cream... oops!  I've had a couple of heated up deli turkey sandwiches, which I wasn't absolutely sure had been steaming, and oh, I guess I do eat Caesar salad without thinking about it, and I had a couple of "pigs in blankets" at a holiday party.  Oops again!

ETA: Remembered something else: I have eaten medium rare burgers too... probably that's the one thing I've just said, "to heck with the rules, I like my burgers a little pink!"  But I've had only about three the whole pregnancy.

  • I haven't stuck to it.  My understanding is that with the deli meat and raw stuff, being pregnant doesn't make me more susceptible to getting sick from the bacteria--there would just be bigger repercussions from getting sick.  So, I eat what I want in moderation and make sure what I have is good quality.
  • In the beginning, I stuck to the list for every little thing. But now, I consume some of the no-no foods in moderation. Medium to medium rare steak, some chocolate for a treat after dinner, ice cream, caesar salads, an Italian sub, etc. The other foods on the list were foods I never ate anyway, so I didn't have to worry. But now that you brought up Brie....mmm.

  • I eat lunch meat sandwiches for lunch most days, without nuking them.  I lick the spoon when I make baked goods.  I keep having soft serve ice cream.  Yep, this baby should have 2 heads and an extra arm or two.

  • I've eaten deli meat and hot dogs.

I didn't really eat sushi anyway.  I switched my steaks from medium to medium-well.

The risk for most of these are various bacterial illnesses that pregnant women have trouble fighting off.

  • I can't stand fried eggs that are well done.  I eat them over easy with a runny yolk.  Other than that, I have probably OD on my caffeine/coffee/chocolate.  I am doing enough damage overindulging on safe stuff.  p.s.  The egg in ice cream is cooked into the custard base.

  • I've eaten some raw cookie dough, I eat lunch meat almost every day and I enjoy sushi at least once a month.  For shame!

  • I'm a pretty picky eater, so I don't eat a lot of those things. I have eaten deli meat and hot dogs, just made sure they were good and hot/cooked. I'm also a sucker for cookie dough so I haven't really stayed away from that, but it's an occasional thing. Although now that you mention it, cookies sound delish and DH is home sick today- maybe some chocolate chip cookies are in order!

  • If we go somewhere where I have to get a turkey sub, I normally ask them to microwave 1st...  Thats to kill the Listeria that is the known bacteria in deli meats that might give your baby listeria poisoning if its not cook to steaming...  and the same goes for hot dogs, just cook them and that will kill the potential hazards...

and most cheese sold in the USA is pasteurized, thats the concern with that, so yes, Ive had those cheese, if I wanted them!  I make sure they are pasteurized 1st...

  • Raw cookie dough

    Raw sushi

    Runny egg yolks

    Cold deli meats

    Soft serve

    There's probably more I'm forgetting.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I haven't really had any of the "do not eat" foods on the list, except last month I had brownie batter as I was putting it into the pan to bake. Just a couple dips with the spatula!

BUT I am a sucker for fast food right now. This baby wants Mcdonalds, Burger King, and especially Chipotle! Baby is perfectly normal, all signs are clear of any defects and she's right on track with growth! I know it's a bad habit but I just can't steer away from the drive thru right now!!!

  • I eat a turkey sandwich every week and i do not heat it up..yuck!! I also have a small glass of wine 1x a week. The baby is doing great and so am i.

  • I have had a few hot dogs and corn dogs and licked a bit of cookie dough.  I've eaten deli meat numerous times.  I honestly forgot I wasn't "supposed" to eat them.  I didn't even know caesar dressing was on the list!

I asked a naturpathic midwife about the food restrictions and she said they were just fine if you were low risk.  Hundreds of thousands of women have had perfectly healthy babies on a diet of deli meat and hot dogs!

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • No.  At all.  Because I don't HAVE a do not eat list.

The only thing I was told to steer clear off was raw and undercooked (aka runny) eggs, and the high mercury fish - but I don't eat fish anyway.

MY Ob told me when I asked her about it, we don't live in a third world country.  We pasteurize, which kills any bacteria we have to worry about in about 90% of that list.  We have strict food standards, and while some things may get through and have recalls once in a while, what's the likelihood of it?  Even overcooking your food won't guarantee anything, think back to the spinach recall, we don't have to steer clear of spinach salads.

The only substantial risk that was serious enough to avoid to my docs are raw eggs and high mercury fish.
