PSA: baby monitor cords

This article was in the paper today:

https://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/feb/11/big-recall-baby-monitors-linked-2-deaths/

Definitely something to keep in mind when placing your baby monitor.  And it now makes me rethink the Summer Infant monitor that we were considering.

Re: PSA: baby monitor cords

  • I saw this and find it to be ridiculous.  This was parent negligence not product malfunction.  It's just common sense not to put anything with cords in the crib or with in reaching distance of the baby so that they can get caught in it and get strangled.

There is nothing wrong with the monitor.

  • It looks like the issue with the monitor has to do with the batteries causing it to overheat and burn people. I agree that the cord problem has nothing to do with the monitor.

  • I agree...sounds like poor parenting choice to me. If you have common sense then one would know better then to place a cord this close to a crib anyways. Sad story...Oh and I wouldn't rethink the monitor the only thing I would worry about would be the rechargable batteries they said were exploding.

Yeah - I'm still researching monitors.  If it's just the rechargable batteries I won't let that knock this one out of contention.

Agreed - it would never occur to me to mount the camera on the crib rail.  That's just kind of dumb.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that found the recall ridiculous. It is very tragic that those babies died, but not a product malfunction.

And it's not for models that are currently sold in retail stores. We got ours at BRU at the end of December and it was not one that was part of the recall.

Yup. I agree. It was stupid parenting.

It was like when the Bumbo seats got recalled. Parents left their babies unsupervised on tables and high places. So the babies were tipping off the tables. The "recall" consisted of a warning label that stated "don't leave baby unsupervised while in this seat."

    Common sense people.
