human vacuum

that's what my son is right now. seriously, for the past week he has all but licked the tray of his high chair to eat every bit of food we have put in front of him. I made meatloaf last night and he ate TWICE as much as I did...I don't know where he's putting it. this morning he ate 2 (adult size) bowls of oatmeal and 4 mini muffins and was still asking for more. Indifferent

we're trying to figure out if he's making up for not eating when he had the stomach flu 2 weeks ago or if he's about to hit a major growth spurt.

when should I start worrying that he has a tapeworm?

Re: human vacuum

  • DD was like that once she started eating "real" foods.  We took her to I-Hop once and some lady commented on how she ate more food than her 8 year old :P  A little after she turned 2 she started getting picky - only wanting a few types of food, eating one bite and saying all done, etc.  Our doctor didn't seem worried.  We're trying really hard to get her to eat what we eat for dinner instead of making pb&j, chicken nuggets, etc.  He said if she skips a meal not to worry.

  • Hahahaha!  My mom always says that when DS is eating like that, he's growing.  For us, there's just days he doesn't eat as much, and other days when he can't get enough.

  • C goes through waves like that. Some nights he picks at his food and barely eats but other nights it's three helpings. I made these calzones (but with swiss chard instead of arugula) on Tuesday and he ate an entire one - exactly as much as I ate.

  • T has been going through that phase (not quite as extreme, but a BIG eater) for a while now.  (And it's really not fun to cut her off at dinner because it's 5 and she can't eat solid food after 5 pm without being in pain from reflux overnight.  OMG, I might lose a finger one day if I have to take food away from her.)  I am constantly amazed anymore at how much a toddler can eat, when I know she'll eventually go through a barely-eating phase.  Who knew learning language required so many calories?  Can I try to learn a new language as an adult to see if my brain will use up all the calories I manage to eat? :P

  • Lol. Growth spurt. DS goes through this periodically - for a few days he's like a bottomless pit, then he barely eats anything for several days.

Toddlers are very good at eating when they are hungry, and not eating when they aren't. I read somewhere that around the age of 5 or 6, we begin to suppress those hunger cues and eat just because it's "mealtime". We'd all probably be a lot healthier if we followed their lead - eat when you're hungry, don't when you're not!

  • For Maggie this always precedes a height growth spurt.  I always feel good that she is finally eating a bit better (she is a little on the skinny side) and then all of a sudden her shirts seems a little short and her dresses look scandalous.  She just went through another and I am buying 4T for summer clothes but I know come mid July or so she wll grow again and I will need 5T summer clothes.
