Best Indy hospital for natural birth options?

Hello all! :)

I am 9 weeks along with my 1st baby and just had my 1st ultrasound. My little grape is soooo cute!

For various personal reasons, I want to have as natural of a birth as possible. According to my insurance coverage (blah blah blah) I have to give birth at a Clarian hospital (i.e. Clarian North, Methodist, etc.). I have heard that Methodist is best with natural birth options; can anyone vouch for that one way or the other? Do you have examples?

Thanks and I appreciate your input!! :)

  • I didn't have a natural birth but Methodist, totally.... with Dr. Soper.

ETA: I totally think Dr. Soper should give me a cut of her pay for all the people I refer her way from this board. I wonder how I can arrange that... lol.

  • I also didn't have a natural birth, but Clarian North seems pretty NB friendly.  I know when one of my friends just had a baby in December there was a girl down the hallway that was going all natural.  They do have very nice birthing tubs in some of the rooms as well.

This.  I had an emergency c/s for other issues and never even went into labor, but I know several other people that delivered there all natural.

  • Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me with your thoughts. I have heard that Methodist is the way to go for natural birth, even over Clarian North (with their fancy tubs and all, which are tempting). :)

I decided to go with Dr. Gallagher at Eagle Creek OB/GYN. Isn't that the same office as Dr. Soper? I chose Gallagher because she delivered my sister-in-law's baby. I think that Dr. Gallagher and Dr. Lund work together, but not with Soper, is that correct?

Do you have any information about Gallagher I should consider? What about Dr. Soper...does she have a backup if she isn't available when I am ready to deliver?

    I appreciate your feedback!!

  • Dr. Soper delivered my son. I only saw her for appt.'s (never saw the other docs) and I never even thought to ask who would deliver my son if she wasn't available. (dumb on my part I guess, but I had heard good things about everyone in that office so I wasn't concerned). So I can't really help you there.

My water broke at 4pm on Friday afternoon, she didn't even make me come into the hospital until Saturday morning (I never started contractions on my own).  After I was at the hospital she waited to let my body start on it's own. After 24 hours of nothing happening, she finally gave me some sort of pill to start contractions. After maybe 5 hours of that not doing anything, I had to start pitocin. My son was born 2 days after my water broke and I'm pretty sure if I had any other doctor, that wouldn't have happened. I'm so glad I had her and wasn't forced into a c-section.

I wanted to try for a natural birth (I wasn't dead set on doing it though) but after having pitocin I had heard the contractions can get really intense and I chickened out and got an epidural. I loved the epidural though and will probably not even try to go natural with the next baby.

  • I delivered at Clarian North. My water broke at 5am and they (my nurse at the time, who I didn't care for) was already talking pitocin by the time I got to the hospital. They started it a couple hours later. That may have been b/c I was GBSP though. The same nurse was encouraging me to get an epidural when I was rating my pain a 2 or 3 out of 10. My next nurse was AWESOME. She was supportive when I mentioned that I may try for a epi-dural/pain med-free birth. She didn't necessarily encourage me a lot though. I do know that everyone else that was there during the time I was in L&D (23 hours) had an epidural. I ended up deciding to get one at 9cm.

I think that it's nice that Clarian North has the supplies (wireless monitoring, tubs in almost all the rooms....mine didn't since I got the last L&D room available which was a bummer since I was considering going w/o pain meds) to offer a natural birth. I don't think they have the appropriate staff sometimes though. I think that's the case regardless of where you go though. It makes it easier to have a supportive/encouraging nurse in order to succeed in your desire to have a natural birth.

I had a great experience with CN and I'll deliver my next LO there too. Regardless of whether I'm trying for a natural birth or not.

  • The nurses at Methodist were awesome. I didn't have a single bad nurse. I did have a really weird one at night right after my son was born (she was Wiccan and telling me how cool it was his name was Rowan because it's a magical tree to Wiccans). I was so out of it and she just talking and it made my head hurt. lol

All the nurses were very supportive and helpful. I didn't let them put the gel stuff on Rowan's eyes after birth and no one fussed or made a big deal about it. I also found it really nice that one of the nurses from Saturday came to our room on Monday to meet Rowan since her shift ended before he was born.

Just out of curiosity, because I don't know anything about it, why did you ask them not to put gel on his eyes?

  •  It's a precaution in case the mother has STDs. I knew I didn't have an STD so it seemed unnecessary to give it to him. Also I had read it can cause the infant to have blurry vision and irritation for up to a few hours after they put it on their eyes.

  • Thanks to all for the tips!

Are any of you familiar with the OB/GYN Care Center at Methodist? I want a natural birth (if all goes well and it is possible) and have been told that they are great. Now I am looking into doctors and midwives. I have to work around my insurance to have a midwife (so silly) and have a doctor listed as the physician, but can have the midwife helping me throughout and actually there for delivery, so long as she works for an approved doctor.

Anywho, are any of you familiar with these doctors at the OB/GYN Care Center at Methodist?
