Quick! Maintenance plan on furnace?

Apparently it's our motor - which is going to cost us about $600.  He's working up quotes but he said that if we got the maintenance plan, it would still be about $600 but it would also include a tuneup, etc.  I'm not sure what else the maintenance plan entails (how much we'll have to pay for it, etc) - but while he's outside - do any of you pay for a plan on it?  Is it worth it?

Re: Quick! Maintenance plan on furnace?

  • my DH would say no and he works in the HVAC industry.  Ask him to give you a quote on replacing the whole furnace, btw.  It may not be much more than the motor.

  • Ok, I went ahead and did it.  It would have been $533 just to replace it - it's $569 to get the maintenance plan and that includes a tune up today and another in the spring.  We've never really had our air conditioner looked at (had a slight problem right after we moved in in 06) so for an extra $35 to get a tune up now and on that - not too bad of a deal.

  • And can I just say that I hate making these decisions?  Jason is unreachable today so it was up to me.  I don't like the pressure!

  • I hate making those choices too!   Sounds like you got a good deal.
  • This is way too late since you already made the decision, but we have a maintenance plan on our heating & air conditioning. It's $17/month ($204 per year) and includes quarterly tune-ups, free labor on service work, and a 20% discount on parts.

After our A/C went out this summer on literally the hottest day of the year, we felt it was worth it. Then again, seeing what you're paying for yours, I feel like we got a crazy good deal.

  • Lauren - the $569 included the new motor, trip out, labor, etc.  It was going to be $533 w/o the maint. plan - so we just added another $36 to get 2 tuneups.  So not $569 for the plan!  :)

  • We have one with airtron on my condo and our house.  They applied the cost of the service call towards the plan.  I think you get higher priority if something breaks, which in peak times can be a great thing.  I don't know that we'll do it every year, but I think getting it tuned up every couple of years is a good thing.
