Contractions without dilation

I went to the OB to get monitored today because I have been having a lot of cramping and BH for the past 5 days.  Dr says they are not real contractions because they are not lasting long enough.  Real contractions last 30sec to 1min.  She did a pelvic and my uterus is posterior and I am not dilated.

Is it possible to go into labor with contractions but not be dilated at all?

Re: Contractions without dilation

  • You can definitely have unproductive contrations - Braxton Hicks or false labor.  It is really frustrating and annoying but just having contractions doesnt mean that you're in labor, it is just your body getting ready for labor sometime down the road.  I think I heard someone on here explain it well by saying "You wouldnt run a marathon without training first, your body needs to train for labor too."

I've been having regular braxton hicks (at least one an hour and as many as 10 minutes apart) since 25 weeks.  I didnt start dilating until 38 weeks and I'm still here 2 days away from my due date.

  • You aren't in labor unless you are dialating and effacing. I had contractions from 32 weeks until I delivered.  The last two weeks were the painful I SWEAR I am in labor contractions.  But I wasn't dialating or effacing.

I did have dialation early on, and effacing as well.  I was 100% effaced by 36 weeks.  BUT- I wasn't in active labor.

Having contractions was my own personal hell but I only had to push five times to get her out!

  • Yes, you can have unproductive contractions. My OB told me BH ARE real contractions, they just don't cause you to dilate.
