So DD has been getting Tylenol every 4 hours for the last 24 because of her fever. I hate that she has to have it so often. So I took her temp this morning at the 4 hour mark when her fever starts to go up. The doctor said to give it to her if her fever started to climb. She didn't want to risk DD's temp spiking to 105 again so if her temp was elevated even a little bit until this infection was cleared up she wanted DD given Tylenol. So when I took her temp at 6am this morning and it was 97.8 I was happy to not give her Tylenol.

She woke up this morning and I can't get her to eat or drink because it hurts to swallow. She has to have something on her stomach in order to get her antibiotics in. So I fed her half a yogurt. She was hungry so she would take bites but each one looked like it hurt. I felt awful. Then after I gave her the antibiotics I remembered the other reason she was getting Tylenol every four hours. She has a massive throat infection, she is in pain. Tylenol relieves pain. I gave her the Tylenol and apologized profusely. It's now 20 minutes later and she is happily finishing the yogurt and drinking her apple juice.

Yep stupid mommy right here.

I normally do not post here, but why are you giving tylenol every 4 hours, that is way to close. Tylenol and Motrin alternating every 4 hours thats all fine and dandy but not tylenol.

I would second guess my ped if he told me to give tylenol every 4 hours, its one of the biggest reasons it was pulled off the shelves not long ago.

I hope your DD starts to feel better though.

No not a stupid mommy. I know i used to hate to give DS tylenol or advil. But then my aunt said to me..It wont hurt him and if you were in pain would you not want to take something? Then it hit me, they are so little and its really not fair for them to have to be in pain. So if he wakes up in the night and is in pain from teething I will give it to him. Plus I just found out from the specialist that he is probably in pain a lot because he has fluid build up and needs tubes

The recalls were due to it being missed used, they changed the labels and stuff. Just like the bumbo seat. Parents were just giving meds to kids and giving to much.

Not to mention children (esp. those under 2)_ are not supposed to consume over a certian about with a 24 hour time frame.

My youngest right now is fighting a fever and the doctors and nurses have told me to alternate between the tylenol and motrin, giving to much in a certain time frame will cause stomach issues.

I am not concerned about the dose. It says that's how often you can give it on the bottle and the fever control chart issued by one of the best children's hospitals in the country says that's how often to give it.

That being said, there could be a Canada/ US thing going on here. I know that with Tempra there is higher concentration of acetomitaphen (sp?) in US Tempra than in Canadian Tempra. Could be the same with Tylenol.

Giving Tylenol every 4 hours is what you are supposed to do. My doctor has said the same thing. Tylenol is every 4 hours, and Motrin is every 6-8 hours. OP, I think you are doing the right thing. And don't worry about being a bad mommy! You did end up giving it to her and now she is feeling better!

My bottle of generic tylenol says it can be given every 4-6 hours, but not to exceed 5 doses in 24 hours. If you give it every 4 hours faithfully, that is 6 doses in 24 hrs.

I have seen adults die from accidental tylenol overdoses. I am very cautious with the total daily dose of tylenol I give my child.

I agree totally with dbos99. Our pedi actually told us NOT to alterntate Tylenol and Motrin, to stick with just one. I guess that is just they way they prefer. Each pedi seems to have a different way of doing things. We just have to trust their advice or there is no sense in going to them. You are NOT a bad Mom!

The recall was due to manufacturing issues, not to off label use. Also every 4 hours is the correct dosing.

The recalls were because the factory wasn't meeting standards and there were particles and crap in the Tylenol and Motrin. It didn't have anything to do with people giving it too often. If that were the case they would take a lot of OTC drugs off the shelves.

Anyway, you are doing fine. I have done the same thing before when DD was teething and when she was sick. I just feel like it's bad to give her too much medicine. But then I realized...it's making her feel better and the doctors AND manufacturers approve the dosage and time, so it's okay to let her have it.

I'm sorry she is so sick! I rarely post, but when I was little, my grandmother use to mix 1Tbsp honey, 1Tbsp lemon juice, and a little bit of water, cook it on low, let it cool and give it to me fro a sore throat. It really works to relieve some of the pain. I know that some people don't give honey until the age of 2 though. I hope she gets better soon!!

I could totally see myself making the same mistake you did. Be patient with yourself...you're doing the best that you can!

Ditto pp. I give my LOs tylenol every 4 hours too. I do keep track of the maximum dosage allowed, but since they don't ever wake up during the night, it always falls below that number. Keep up the good work. I hope your LO feels better soon!
