Vacation

Okay, by now you all know I plan way in advance, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that I'm trying to plan for things that aren't even factors yet, haha...

I feel like we should take a trip to the beach this year since we didn't get to last year and it may be our last chance without children. Our anniversary is in May, so that would be a good time, but I'm also entertaining the idea of going in September with friends to split the cost of a house.

My question is would you rather go to the beach when you're very early in your pregnancy or nearing the end? I'm not pregnant yet, but you see where I'm going with this. :)

Re: Vacation

  • I went to the beach 2x while I was pg. I was late 1st Tri/early 2nd tri when I went.  I had a very good time both times and wasn't huge so I enjoyed that.  We went on vacation when I was about 32 weeks and that wasn't as enjoyable bc I was getting big and I was VERY tired.

  • Thanks for the response!

I figured later on would be an issue for that reason..I'm just not sure if that's better than potentially being constantly sick early on.

I know this whole question is ridiculous since I'm not even pregnant yet and don't know when I would actually be in my 1st trimester, etc. I just don't know how else to decide unless I just wait until I'm pregnant to book something, but I hate the idea of possibly missing out on a vacation because it takes forever or something, you know?

  • I honestly don't think you'll have trouble booking anything for the beach, for what it's worth!

Mid-pregnancy is generally best for most people.  I would have preferred to go early because I didn't have bad morning sickness.  Late in pregnancy, everything is 10 degrees hotter and 10x more miserable!  Ha!

ETA: Don't let that scare you - I was not miserable all the time.  I just have a vivid memory of standing on the beach talking to a friend around 37 weeks (in June).  Finally I told her I had to go inside because I thought I was going to die if I stayed outside.  lol.

  • The more I think about it, the more I think September would be better. Chances are that I would be past my 1st trimester by then, and even if I got pregnant this month, I wouldn't be TOO far along by then.

The good thing is that I wouldn't have to book that anytime soon, so if nothing's happened by May, we might be able to book something last minute and avoid the whole situation. :)

Haha, yeah, I bet that was pretty bad in June!

  • I think you should just book when you want to go, because there's just know way to know when you'll actually be pregnant. We were TTC for a few months, then on a break during my last semester of school, then not actively trying but not preventing either...in all, it was 9 months after I got off BC when I got my BFP. But that would have been typical, even without the break in the middle. But anyway, I'm sure you've thought about all that.

That being said , we already had my graduation trip to Mexico planned before I knew I'd be in early first trimester when it was time to go (Memorial Day weekend). While it was fun and a beautiful, I had NO endurance out in the heat, and felt downright terrible several times. I also would not have wanted to go anywhere late ish-because of comfortability as well as preterm labor paranoia with travel, etc.

We went briefly to the beach in Sept at 21 weeks and that was nice. I wasn't sick but still wore a swimsuit even though there was a bump. :)  And it was perfect weather that time of year. So,if /when you are planning on a trip during a pregnancy, keep in mind that midway through is the way to go-and September was nice. I would go wit that regardless, because it'll be hotter in May.

  • I went to the beach when I was 24 weeks (it was June) I wasn't that big but it was extremely hot that summer.  I spent as much time as possible in the pool lol.  Me personally I could have handled a trip early in pregnancy because I was a lucky one who wasn't sick. We went to Chattanooga and did the whole Rock City/Ruby Falls thing when I was 26/27 weeks and it was very enjoyable.   I don't think I could have handled it past 34 weeks.  We had to go down to Auburn when I was 36 weeks(it was early Sept) and the next day my feet and ankles were sooo swollen and my back was hurting from the riding...and that was just 4 hours.  I'd say go for it on planning one...like you said don't risk missing out when you don't know what is going to happen :)
  • I didn't go to the beach while PG but we did go to Memphis when I was about 12 weeks and it was miserable because I was so sick and tired all the time. I felt like I was holding everyone back because I kept having to stop to eat then puke ;) Also, we were at a NHRA drag race (ugh, still don't know why I agreed to that trip in the first place) and I had a full blown panic attack because of all the fumes, vibrations, and noise. It was horrible!! All that being said, I think September would be perfect for you.
  • Thanks for the feedback, ladies!

  • we went to the beach when I was 7 months pregnant. It was in May and we went to Ft. Lauderdale. I enjoyed it because it was the last bit of relaxing and time for just me and hubby before the baby came. Plus, I was able to sport the two piece without people staring at me wondering if I was pregnant or not. It was actually the first time someone felt confident to ask me when I was due.
