Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Please help....food related

I don't know if it is just a phase, but my DS seems to not want to eating anything these days unless it is cheese and bread.  He has discovered that he can throw his food on the floor and keeps doing it.  Dinner last night was unbelievably frustrating.

Any suggestions on things to do about a picky eater?  He is underweight and so I am not allowed to just go with the theory of if he doesn't eat, he doesn' eat.

Any suggestions on ways to get him to stop throwing the food on the floor?

Please tell me this is all phase....

  • That is very frustrating, to have a picky eater and he also throws food.  I totally understand about how stressful it is, especially when they're underweight.  Ds was a preemie, and has always been in the low percentiles for weight.   I have even complained to his pedi that he has turned into quite a carb addict.  The only things he liked was bread, mac n cheese and snacks.  She told me that it was just a phase and would pass.  He's a great milk drinker, so I would let him have as much milk as he wanted when he was going through his picky phase.

Now, he's a great eater and loves most veggies.  I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it.  There's a great chapter in Vicky Lovine's book Girlfriends Guide to Toddlers that helped reassure me.  You might check it out.

  • It is a phase, but it might last a long time.

Toddlers go through fads, then they're on to the next thing.  Offer your son a variety of foods--new foods and favorites.  Give him a small amount of each food, and offer more (or let him ask for more, if he signs/talks).  It is normal for toddlers to eat only 1 or 2 foods at a meal.  I have not read the book mentioned by the PP, but I started using Ellyn Satter's guidelines.  Mealtimes are much more pleasant.  And DS actually tries new foods, occasionally.
