Polish/Czech Names....

Hello all, I am not pg., but DH and I will be TTC soon, and are discussing names for our phantom babies.

We have a VERY Polish last name that is 3 starts with an 'S' and sounds like 'check' at the end. We like uncommon (but not yoonique) names, and I would prefer to stay off of the top 100...or even 500 on the SSA list. We are tossing around the idea of using a Polish, Czech, or Eastern European first name to go with our last name.

Some names I like are Mila, Mikael, Olesia, Jarek.....

What are some Polish, Czech, or Eastern European names that you like???

Oh I really love Mila and Olesia from your list!

I know of a couple of little girls from the Ukraine, one named Viktoria who went by Vika and another named Lera. I also knew a woman who was from some country that no longer exists... I want to say that it's now modern day Slovakia? Her name was Nadia. A good friend of mine is named Olga - she's Russian. Her middle name is Ivanova. I also remember an exchange student by the name of Viktor growing up. He was a really nice guy. I also know a guy by the name of Jakob who went by Jak - he is Romanian. I've always loved the ice skater's name, Ekaterina Gordeeva. I also love Katerina. I also know a lady from the Netherlands named Claudia... or is it Denmark? I also know of some people in Slovakia, the man's name is Milan. I love that name.

I second Konrad. From your list, I love Mila.

I have a Polish friend named Bozena (pronounced Bozhena). It has really grown on me, but that could also be because she is really sweet and I have a good association.

I feel like many of the women I met when I was in Poland (DH studied abroad there for a summer) were named Masha. It's either a nn for Maria or Marta, I think Maria.

Another Eastern European name I really love is Uri/Yuri! I had to throw that one in. Also, Anastasia is a pretty common one. And I really love Dmitri as well.

My family is Polish -- my maiden name ended in 'ski' -- and my name is Tatyana. I think that is more Russian than Polish, but I get so many compliments on it (even though I usually go by Tanya).

my BIL is both polish and czech and his name is Andrej. the 'j' throws people off but i love it.

I have a friend named Erzsebet (Hungarian for Elizabeth). Her nn is Erzi (AIR-zhee: zh as in French "Jean"). So cute!

We are polish....my hubby alot more than me ( I have 1/8 of it on my side) but DH really wants polish names. Me, being a teacher doesn't want to give a name that no one can pronounce. So we looked for a few that may work:

Girls: if it was a girl it would be Nadia

Boy: The one I liked was Marek.

Polish names for girls that I like:

Aleksandra, (nn Olenka, Ola) Emilia, Zofia, Natalia, Kamila, Monika, Magdalena (nn Magda), Oliwia, Karolina,

Polish names for boys:

Aleksander (nn Alek, Olek,) Konrad, Emil, Stefan, Oskar, Krystian, Eryk, Michal.

As far as Polish names go, I'd suggest going with something more modern, that can be easily pronounced in English as well. Polish is really hard to pronounce, most names aren't easy.

Many names like "Kazimierz, , Genowefa" etc. are very dated, (no longer really in frequent use in Polish by the younger generation).

Ooh, I love Maksim and Viktor for boys, and Natalia, Karolina for girls. THANK YOU all for the names....I am going to read through them all again. This is making me more convinced to go this route.

In Czech you can also spell it with an O. It's Ondrej. It has a hacek over the r as well. I like it a lot but I think Americans might have trouble getting Andr? out of the Czech spelling.

Czech names I like for boys: Toma? (pronounced Tomash), Marek, and Milo? (Mee-losh)

For girls: Marta, Petra, Leona, and Lucie

This is actually a nn for Zofia, which is Sofia in Polish.

I am Polish, and the most PL name MH would let me get away with is Mila....so Mila it is.
