Postpartum Depression

week old and totally overwhelmed!

LO is one week old and I cannot stop crying.  This is my first, I am trying to breastfeed exclusively and having a lot of trouble.  LO is up most of the day crying, won't always latch properly.  On top of that DH goes back to work Monday and just the thought of being alone makes me very anxious.  I know the baby blues are common at this stage, but my anxiety seems tremendous.  Any advice Mommies??

Re: week old and totally overwhelmed!

  • take a deep breath.  the first 2-3 weeks are the hardest.  I would really suggest having your husband take another few days off to help.

Try contacting a lactation consultant to help with BF.  Or try a nipple shield to help with the latch.

What has the pedi said about the weight gain?  Has the baby started to gain weight?  Does the pedi suggest a little supplement after nursing to get the baby some full to sleep a little bit?

Congratulations, and good luck.  It does get easier.

This completely.  The first week was really hard.  I agree with asking your husband to stay home a little longer.  Lactation consultants do help a lot, also check out Kellymom.com and the breastfeeding board here helped me a lot too.  Best of luck and it will get easier

  • First of all, what you are feeling is normal. You hormones are going through so much change right now. It is ok to cry if you need to! As far as BF goes, can you call a LC? How about getting a postpartum doula? Even if you can have someone come for a few hours a day it would be most helpful!

If you can't afford to get a LC then try calling a breastfeeding support group in your area. Also, can any family or friends come help you during the day? It is amazing the difference a shower, nice nap and hot lunch can do you! Don't be afraid to let those close to you know that you need help!

  • DS was bottle fed breastmilk because he couldn't latch.  I EPd for 4 months because I couldn't handle the pain.  Try to pump and give DS the bottle milk, unless you are opposed.  Also, what DH and I would do was when DS woke up to eat, DH would feed DS with bottles and I would pump.  We would both get done at the same time and we both got the same amount of sleep.
