Repost from August 2011 board
I'm in a fit of 'researching my options' and i'm totally and completely uninformed about the pros and cons of everything surrounding the actual birthing process - am seeking to remedy this. Do you ladies have recommendations for books that deal with the pros and cons of things like epidurals, pain management, natural childbirth, etc? Ideally, i'm looking for evidence-based books rather than a book that is determined to 'win me over' to their way of thinking. TIA!

To be completely honest, I found that reading Ina May Gaskin's books prepared me much more for childbirth than any other books I read... of course, she advocates natural childbirth as she was a midwife...
It is very helpful to read and understand how the birth process works before the big day, but it's hard to say how the day actually will unfold. We had an emergency C/S with our first, but I'm glad we tried for the natural birth as long as we did.
I like Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin.
Someone on here also recommended The Big Book of Birth for a good objective overview but I haven't read it myself.
Oh and you might find Henci Goer's books interesting. She wrote The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth and Obstetrical Myths vs. Research Realities. She looks at the evidence supporting (or not supporting) different practices and talks about studies.
But she's not really objective. She definitely comes down on the side of natural birth/few interventions.
This is excellent:

Made for labor coaches, but will give you an awful lot of info about all the different options for everything out there.

I love "The Big Book of Birth".
I also liked "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth".
I didn't like Ina May, and not because I'm anti-natural birth. I just hated her tone and writing style. I want more science, less earth-mother.
Check your library. Try out some books before you buy - it's important to find one that resonates with you.
